Using Future Stars in low level D1 Topic

Ok, this is my first year as a D1 coach, and I'm used to having somewhere between 15k-20k for recruiting when I was in D2, and because of the limited budget I only used FSS on the close by states (if at all). But later in recruiting season, I often picked up drop downs from across the country and globe.  So while I focus on the recruits close by, I always tried to stay open to recruiting guys from far away.

With all this being said, as a D1 coach (with 6 schollies to fill), I have almost 100k for recruiting.  If I scout every state, I still have about 75k left for recruiting.  Does anybody do this (or has done this) as a low level D1 coach?  Or do you still just focus on the states close by at first?

It can be a bit baffling to have all that $$ at your disposal all of a sudden when you move up to D1.  I ran into the same thing last season @ IUPUI, but you're still best served early on to stay close to home.  You can expand a bit further than you did at D2, but battles are still costly when you get to a few hundred miles and up.  Plus, being at Yale with a D prestige, if anyone sees you overextending yourself and dipping into some of their local players, you won't stand much of a chance in a battle unless you're ready to drop some serious coin.

One useful tip that I didn't do in my first season but did in my second at D1 is keep an eye on the targets of big named schools vs how many scholarships they have open.  You should be able to find a handful that are targeting 5-6 players with only 3-4 openings, so when they fill their scholarships, those guys they had targeted and didn't sign will become undecided.  Most schools will leave those kids alone because they don't want to battle and they'll just be forgotten about, so if you keep them in mind you could get a steal that was a backup for a Big-6 but becomes a big piece for your team.

you want to stay under 270 unless its with an undecided later in recruiting.  i would only scout states that are within the 300 mile range for your primary targets.  just my opinion but the additional money is balanced out by the low prestige your recruiting with.  you need to find some diamonds in the rough so use of FSS is crucial but you want to have enough money to bag the guys thereafter.  good luck.

First of all, don't scout every single state, since there may be a couple of states like Alaska that won't even have a single D1 recruit.

Second, I think it'd be a great idea in your situation to immediately scout 8 states to get your maximum 20% discount.  Then see what you have with those 8 states.  You might, for example, find plenty of guards and forwards that you really like with high potential in those 8 states.  Then you can continue buying more states, but limit yourself to the states with the interesting looking post players only.

FSS is well worth the cost - but bear in mind that, even on a $100k budget, you'll find yourself at the end of recruiting really wishing you had an extra hundred bucks.  So go ahead and scout those states but do it wisely.

There's exceptions to that 300mile rule, namshub.  When I was recruiting from states like NC or NH, I'd often scout a cheap state like Idaho and find an awesome, overlooked diamond-in-the-rough with high potential in almost every category.  The distance penalty wouldn't matter too much, since I'd pursue that recruit uncontested.

I got a National Player of the Year (#1overall pick, too) with a D prestige school by doing exactly that.

Wow.  Yeah I would not scout 50 states.  In D1 I have ranged from 2-16 depending on what school I was and how many I had open.  With 6 open, I would scout 8-16 states.  Kind of depends, if you are in New England, I might do even more as DE, DC, VT, ME, NH, CT, RI, etc are all so small.

Is Future Stars available after signings are over to look at recruits for next year?

Yes, if you have enough carryover money to afford it.

I scout from 2 to about 10-12 in the high end.  I have never been in New England though, up there maybe I would go to 15 or 20 at the most.
