Limited Upside? Topic

So my freshmen SG on my D1 Brown team, Steve Owens, has good ATH/SPD/DEF but his PER/PASS/BH ARE ONLY 31/37/50

His WE however is 87 but he supposedly only has "limited upside" in PER/PASS/BH.

Because of that, will I really not be able to get his numbers into at least the 70s or 80s by his SR year?

I'm coming back to HD after a long hiatus and this whole "upside potential" thing wasn't here and is totally new to me...

How much does supposed upside potential really matter? How much does it impact decisions on recruiting and practicing?

Thanks for any advice/experience you guys have with this..

Low potential means he will grow no more than 7 points in each of those categories in his career.  Nowhere near the 70s or 80s.

wow... so my frosh SG with 31 per and 87 we won't ever get higher than 38 per??

I guess A LOT has changed in the two years I've been gone....

Guess so...  Potential really changed the game.

So how many perimeter practice minutes do I give to a freshman SG with 31 PER and 87 WE  if he has low potential?

I would be going 0. 38 vs 31 per, not much of a diff and better to use those minutes into areas with high potential.

If he has low potential, you won't see more than a 5 point increase in that category over his career.  So most of all the minutes into LOW potential categories is a waste.  You might gain 1-2 points in a season if you put in around 16 mins.  If you have other categories he can improve in, use those minutes in those instead.

so the "bright D1 future outside shot at the NBA" is really not so much then...

Yeah, sometimes the assistant coach isn't as smart as he thinks he is.

What are his potentials outside of those areas?

ath: limited upside
spd: limited upside
def fund: big upside
shot blk: limited upside
low post: big upside
perimeter: limited upside
ball handling: limited upside
free throw: limited upside

I guess passing and low post then? what kind of hit am I looking at if I cut him at the end of the year?

oh and  I guess conditioning and footwork for defense..

That guy definitely won't be able to play SG. I looked at his profile, and he'd be better suited to play SF (although his RB and LP are very low).  Guys with a 37 BH should not play guard.  If I were you, I'd take all the minutes out of ball handling and perimeter, and put those minutes into footwork, lowpost, and rebounding.  You should also not spend too many minutes in conditioning as his ATH and SPD are maxed out.   This guy will never be a good scorer, but if you build up his defense he can be a pretty good defender.

That being said, I'd still recommend cutting him at the end of the season.  I'm not sure if you used it, but when recruiting in D1 with the new engine, you should always use FSS to determine the recruits' potentials before signing them.  Work ethic doesn't mean as much anymore; potential is what you should look at.
