I get an e-mail saying I shouldn't work a certain attribute for my player. If I put in 0 will the attribute decrease?

Only very, very slowly.  You'll likely never see a 1-point drop, and even if you do it's only 1 point and you can get it back quickly by putting minutes back in if you want to.
