Easy. Schedule smart. Let's say you schedule a schedule with 10 .500 teams (humans/sims whoever) with a .500 opponents w/l, and do it all on the road. even if you go 2-14 in your "dominant" conference, It gives you a 10-16(which will boost your sos and rpi, even if you lose in the CT). If you can go 8-2 vs. the sims, you should get a great sos and an nit berth. Schedule games you can win for your out of conf schedule, and if your conf schedule is "that tough", you can still boost your prestige. The teams in the pit aren't that hard to get a win or two from and if you win in the postseason(even in the nit), there's no reason to be fired.
To pick a couple from one of my worlds, all big 6 conferences:
Team A: Conf 4-12, Overall, 13-14, rpi 67 sos 40: Going to the pit, should keep or improve his "C" prestige (B range baseline) as its his second season with the team.
Team B: Conf 5-11, Overall 14-13, rpi 68, sos 45: Going to the pit, Should keep or improve his "C" prestige as its his third season there.
Team C: Conf 5-11, Overall 14-14, rpi 73, sos 50: PIT bound, C+ prestige, fourth season there.
Team D: Conf 4-12, Overall 12-16 rpi 49, sos 10, Probably pit bound, Long time coach, Will probably win a game or two, maybe the whole thing, and may not lose his B+.
You should be able to make the postseason in about 6 years, no matter how tough your conference is. NO LOGICAL REASON for a coach not to be fired at a big 6 school after no postseasons in 8 years. Coaching is more than gameplanning and recruiting. The schedule plays an incredibly important role, especially in a situation like this.
