General thoughts on this scenario? Topic

Saw this and it kinda blew my mind (and ticked me off at the same time). Here is a snapshot of a BCS school with an A- baseline. Anyone else think this is just too much boost from the conference? Borders on rediculous how little effort the actual coach had to put in.

Don't get me started on this one. I don't know the team, but it is the baseline, not just the conference boost. And if the same coach had the job for 9 seasons without any success hisass should've been fired long ago. I've come to the realization that the Baseline is part of the game but my pet peeve now is at an A range school, you should have about 4 years to get built up and then the booster complaints should start flying in. I've you're experienced/good enough to get a Big 6 job and the benefits that come with it, you should have that more pressure to succeed. Join me on this one. Send in a ticket.

I don't know the school, but the conference has got to be giving him at least a third of a letter grade boost, from B+ to A-. I had an A- baseline school, and had two 20-win+ seasons with two 2nd round NT appearances and that only got me to a B+ (which seems about right). That said, I agree this coach should have been fired a long time ago. Needing 9 seasons to break the 11-win mark at an A- baseline school is ridiculously lenient (assuming this is the same coach).

I'd like a world with no baseline prestige

It's much more baseline than conference, and I agree, that's bad.

Be curious to see what seble's comment/rationalization would be if you sent him that example.

It annoys me too. Here is my Knight Villanova team, also currently at an A- prestige (B+ baseline)  by comparison -

35 xxx    23-9   6-2   13-5   4-2 11-5   20   16    A-    ( NT Sweet 16)
34 xxx    24-7   6-2   15-3   3-2 11-5   23   13    A-    (NT 2nd Rnd )
33 xxx    25-6   6-2   16-2   3-2 12-4   17   15    A-    (NT 2nd Rnd)
32 xxx   18-12  4-4   12-6   2-2 6-10   xx    24    B+  (NT 2nd Rnd)
31 xxx   20-11  9-5     8-4   3-2   9-7    xx   34    B+  (NT Sweet 16)

I've also had a player drafted in each of the last five seasons

Here's my own personal snapshot as comparison:
   50 survivor45      RPI 29                    A-      NT At-large Bid NT (1st Round)
  49 survivor45      RPI 7 Rank 8         A-      Conf Champion CT Champion NT (Sweet 16)
  48 survivor45      RPI 8 Rank 6         A-      Conf Champion CT Champion NT (Sweet 16)
  47 survivor45      RPI 12 Rank 10    A-      Conf Champion CT Champion NT (Sweet 16)
  46 survivor45      RPI 9 Rank 19      A-      CT Champion NT (Final Four)
  45 survivor45      RPI 38                    B+     NT At-large Bid NT (2nd Round)
  44 survivor45      RPI 21                    B       NT At-large Bid NT (Sweet 16)
  43 survivor45      RPI 17                    C+    NT At-large Bid NT (1st Round)
I'm only 'meeting expectations'.

The really frustrating thing is there is a player who I really, really want (b/c of the name and position - it's exactly the same as someone who played for my school in RL) but I have to battle a school with high baseline prestige.  And once again, I'm going to blow $50k+ and lose yet another battle.

If the only purpose for baseline prestige is to frustrate, then the game is doing a helluva job.

They won't even look at it. Say everything is working as it should and won't look at anything to do with prestige again. Nice.

The interesting thing that's always left out of these discussions is this: how does a relatively-low-prestige team ever compete in a high-prestige conference? That is, when I took over NCSU, we were at the bottom prestige possible in the ACC (C+ when I got it, but they floated prestige that season, and it immediately dropped), and I was the first human coach. It took me 2 full cycles of recruits (8 seasons) to be able to remotely compete in the league. Few would even sign up for that, but who would sign up if the were allowed to drop to D-? Nobody but an alum. And they'd be fired before they could succeed.

So where's the balance? How do you let lower-level teams in the big conferences have a chance without both baseline and conference prestige?

It was easier when I did it, too, because they hadn't dropped potential on us at all yet... State has good (A-) baseline prestige. Imagine it at Miami or FSU or BC.We've certainly had good coaches succeed and struggle at those schools in the eons I've been there. But I'm curious as to where people think the line is...

Easy. Schedule smart. Let's say you schedule a schedule with 10 .500 teams (humans/sims whoever) with a .500 opponents w/l, and do it all on the road. even if you go 2-14 in your "dominant" conference, It gives you a 10-16(which will boost your sos and rpi, even if you lose in the CT). If you can go 8-2 vs. the sims, you should get a great sos and an nit berth. Schedule games you can win for your out of conf schedule, and if your conf schedule is "that tough", you can still boost your prestige. The teams in the pit aren't that hard to get a win or two from and if you win in the postseason(even in the nit), there's no reason to be fired.

To pick a couple from one of my worlds, all big 6 conferences:
Team A: Conf 4-12, Overall, 13-14, rpi 67 sos 40: Going to the pit, should keep or improve his "C" prestige (B range baseline) as its his second season with the team.
Team B: Conf 5-11, Overall  14-13, rpi  68, sos 45: Going to the pit, Should keep or improve his  "C" prestige as its his third season there.
Team C: Conf 5-11, Overall 14-14, rpi  73, sos 50: PIT bound, C+ prestige, fourth season there.
Team D: Conf 4-12, Overall 12-16 rpi 49, sos 10, Probably pit bound, Long time coach, Will probably win a game or two, maybe the whole thing, and may not lose his B+.

You should be able to make the postseason  in about 6 years, no matter how tough your conference is. NO LOGICAL REASON for a coach not to be fired at a big 6 school after no postseasons in 8 years. Coaching is more than gameplanning and recruiting. The schedule plays an incredibly important role, especially in a situation like this.

Welp, I couldn't get the SG I wanted, Henry Williams. The real life Henry Williams was also a SG and is the all-time leading scorer for Charlotte. He is currently a pastor at Mt. Zion & is truly one of the good guys in basketball and in life. The WIS Henry Williams wasn't among the best players in my 200 mile radius and wouldn't accept my scholarship offer even after I annoyed him with phone calls, letters, about a hundred home visits and a bunch of campus visits. Frustrating. Even more frustrating is knowing that, thanks to baseline prestige, the exact same scenario would play out for me if I continue to win over the next 100 seasons. It's just a brick wall. wronoj- I actualy would prefer a team like NC State. It just takes one good season to gain the momentum towards A+. I like this game but there's no benefit to pay the fees to stay at my alma mater long-term. You're stuck, thanks to a feature in the game that should have been downscaled after season 10.

curious how many early entries he had
