When you redshirt a player what should be done about study hall? Can you set it to zero or should you set it as though he is on the active squad?

Set it as if he's on your active squad, especially for freshman, 1st semester GPA does a lot to dictate how good of a student he will be for his entire career. Also when guys fail off it hurts your reputation which will hurt when you are trying to get a different job.

kmason, are you certain about this 1st semester GPA dictating how good of a student a guy will be thing?  I've never seen anything to indicate that...

It's definitely a factor. If you take two otherwise identical kids, and the one gets a 2.2 as a freshman and the other gets a 3.6, the kid with the 3.6 will require less study hall from there on out.

does the old formula freshman HS 4.0 - GPA x 10, sophmore 3.6 - GPA  x 10, junior 3.2 - GPA x 10, and senior 2.8 - GPA  x 10 still hold true with the new updates?

Yes, but remember that formula is a conservative one.

Yes.

Maybe, it depends on how much you value gpa. My strategy is just to keep players above a 3.0 (at least through their first three years), and If a player completes his freshman year with a 3.0 or higher then this task is rather easy to accomplish. I start each freshman with 10 minutes of study hall, wait to see what the mid-terms reveal, then adjust accordingly. Sometimes I can get away with only 8 minutes, but occasionally I have to go as high as 15. The following years generally fall in these ranges: sophmores 4 to 6, juniors 1 to 2, and seniors 0 (almost always).
