I was wondering if there is a trick to redshirting players.  There was a recruit that I recruited heavily and was the only school he was considering.  he said "I'd sign with you today if I could ".   I then did the inform of a redshirt and since he has rejected every phone call ect and I'm not on his considering list anymore.  thanks for any help.

If all else fails just use inform of non redshirt and he should consider you again

I agree. I also never tell the recruit until after they have signed. If they get really mad, and their WE drops a lot, sometimes I end up not redshirting them.

Thanks.  his WE is 93.  so I don't care if it drops a little.

I've never had a problem informing them if I do 2 home visits at the same time.  Seems to offset the negative effort the inform brings.

often - but not always - what milk says will work

I think it depends on

- how good the recruit is compared to your prestige - are you reaching to get him or is he thrilled that you are talking to him

- how thoroughly convinced he is - not just considering - but what does FSS say

- how much effort you spent on him

- how much of a team player he is

- whether anyone is recruiting him, considered or not

i have never told a player I would redshirt him.  I saw a thread that really helped me recently.  the essence of it was:  if he rejects the redshirt make sure you keep him off the depth chart so he doesn't play at all and try again after non-conference games.  then again later if he keeps rejecting it.  he won't complain as a freshman with lack of playing time so no worries about there.  You can keep taking it on an off without damage as far as i can tell.  you may get comments like "make up your mind" but don't worry about it.  I think as the season goes on and the player sees they won't play, the chances of accepting the redshirt increase.  That coach all recommended not even playing them in exhibition games.  I think if he is off the depth chart he will not be put in the game.  I think I may have tried to make sure all the depth slots were used by other players too so there was no chance that at the 4th player he would suddenly come in for 1 min and blow the whole thing. 

In my case the guy accepted it before the season ended.  however, I wondered if I could have gone the whole year this way and applied the redshirt during the conference tourney or NT or something like that.  or even when I got knocked out... but that opportunity didn't come up so I don't know how long you can push this.

I can answer all of the questions, as I have been trying all year to redshirt a guy.  I left him off the depth chart all year and he has never seen the court.  Each position in my depth chart was either 2 or 3 deep.  

 So, yes, if you leave him off the depth chart he will NEVER come in, no matter what.  

Yes, you can keep redshirting and then rescinding the redshirt as many times as you want, and each and every time you rescind, his work ethic will go back to the original level. 

The player does practice and does progress normally (perhaps a little less due to lack of play time however).

Yes, you can continue to try during the CT and NT, even after you are knocked out.

And, no, my guy hasn't accepted yet, after trying at least 30 times.............will try again sophomore year probably, or cut him just cause he has ****** me off and I now hate him.....

To update, in case this helps anyone....

After season rollover, tried to RS again, and he happily accepted.  So although steadfastily refused all throughout freshman year, he immediately accepted on the first try as a sophomore.

To add to what Apollo and Brian said, I tried a new wrinkle lately.  Someone on this board mentioned that your existing depth at a position can figure into a player's willingness.  So I held out two guys the past 2 seasons who were 3rd or 4th in rotation behind upperclassmen.  I didn't even try to redshirt until after the first exhibition was over and they didn't play.  In both cases, the player accepted the RS without a whimper.

Small sample size and all, it beats some of the whining players have given me in the past.  I've never informed a recruit I wanted to redshirt them - I'd rather spring it on them after they're enrolled.  That's the kind of jerk coach I am :)

If your using the 2-3 home visits with inform of. Don't do it until your already being considered. Once you are,send the hv.

In general, what criteria would you guys use when deciding who to redshirt? Rule one would be, I suppose, "I don't really need him this year"

Ryan, just MHO:  I usually pick the freshman who has a couple of solid players at his position in front of him, but I also keep an eye on my positional balance.  That is, if I have 4-5 big men now but I'm going to lose a couple of them after the season,  it's a good time to consider a RS.  I know people's philosophies will vary on this, but I have been trying to use redshirts to balance class size, too - attempting to keep one slot rolling over every year as a RS so at least one player will see 5 years' improvement instead of 4.

I prefer to RS a kid who has good potentials in his core skills - that's when a redshirt can really make a difference.
