#1 Draft Pick Nearly Doubles His Signing Demand Topic

Weldon Griffin was my No. 1 draft pick. He rejected the $3,827,650 initially offered and came back with a demand of $6,532,500. That's a crap ton of money, and I want to negotiate, but I also really want to sign the bastard. If I offer $5 million or so, will he negotiate, or will he just go straight to college?

He has 31 DUR, 89 Health, 61 makeup and projects to

I've never had any luck low balling a guy.  You just have to give him what he wants, his demands won't change.  He's worth $6.5 easy.

Just a hunch, but I'm guessing there's no way he reaches those numbers unless he's 10-15 points away right now.

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of, jonas, thanks.

And you're right, mhulshult, he probably won't get to those projections, but he's still going to be pretty good. Clear top pick in the league's draft this year, and I've spent more on IFA that had less upside. I'm going to take the hit and just get him signed.

6.5m is nothing for a #3 overall pick. And no you can't low ball him, that is the lowest he will sign for.

You'd be crazy not to give him that.

Get his name on the paper.  $6.5 is cheap for him

I gave him what he wanted. Now that he's signed, his projections have gone down a bit, but he'll still be good. Weldon Griffin

New projections, with 29 DUR, 100 Health and 58 makeup (which sucks, but oh well):

As he is now, he's practically ready for my sorry ML team already.

Thanks for the feedback, everybody.

You spent 1 mil for H.S. scouting and only 6 mil for Adv scouting. I think your projection numbers might be a bit off.

You say his numbers went down a bit.....I say he got better after you signed him.

Yep, he got a better P1, P2 and P4.  but with control of only 98 and vL/vR of 92 and 94 he will probably get ripped!  :)

He's going to be terrific....even if he misses his contril and vL/vR by 10 points.

moosep, I don't know where you got those scouting figures from; I spent 14M on college and HS scouting, and he's a JR in college, so my HS scouting doesn't matter. I spent 10M on advance scouting, so my college scouts might have gotten it closer. Anyway, I'm not expecting him, at 21, to hit all the projections.

This is not true (well, the 2nd part is untrue); you can offer less than a revised demand, and prospects will, some of the time, accept.  My first round pick season 1 of World For Life.  I've done it a number of other times, as well.

This is not true.  It doesn't mean you'll be successful in low-balling him, but I've done it.  I mention this story every time I see a subject like this come up on the forums.  I had  a 1st round pick that did the same thing.  His upped demands were more than I had left.  So I offered him what I had left.  Over and over and over again.  He refused every time until the playoffs came.  Finally he signed.

Regarding your pick, I wouldn't even bother to lowball him.  What would you do with the money you save?   It can't possibly be worth what this guy will give you...even though he won't meet projections.  What are his current ratings?

silentpadna, his current pitching ratings are below. Like I said, he's nearly ready for my basement-level ML team at this point, though I'll give him some time to develop in the minors. He's got a current durability of 29, health of 85 and makeup of 58. I agree, he was worth the 6.5 million -- my initial freakout at having to pay so much more faded quickly.
