We get a lots of moans and groans (and an occasional wimper from me) about injuries, so how about giving owners some small amount of control over it? ANY sense of control will greatly reduce the complaints, and also add another interesting twist.
One way would be to create an injury-prevention managerial setting. 'Aggressive' would allow players to play despite the ingrown-toenail. 'Conservative' would have the manager pull the player at the first whiff of trouble. Aggressive might be set for those who are pushing for or in the playoffs, at the increased risk of injuries occurring. Conservative might be done by those with a low Medical budget, but their key players get pulled more often in favor of a backup. Aggressive is for the risk-taker. Conservative rewards those teams with good depth.
Taking this to the maxx, you could adjust this managerial setting based on the rated intelligence of the bench coach, should they take over.
Say "YES" to less whining!
