If you make a promise to an ineligible player or to a player who becomes ineligible, do they hold it against you since their promise likely will not be fulfilled?

No. The only risk is a very small chance that the ineligible kid will take the SAT and score good suddenly making him eligible. In that case promises matter.

You'll be lucky if he even stays - many times they choose not to pay their own way and go JUCO.

And if you re-recruit him the next season, that promise will be forgotten.
