You ended up trading away a LF who was going to hit .300+/.370 with 35+ homers and 45 doubles for the next bajillion years. He was completely under arb control, meaning he was WAY cheap. Yang was a HoF type of guy. You got an expensive ace. I don't know what your FA pitcher market looked like, but you could have got somebody not quite as good as Higley for less money AND had Yang, which is what the other guy is going to do now. You gave up 10 years of Yang for 3 years of Higley, and the total investment wouldn't have been that much more for Yang ($1M total for the next three years, $4M for the next two, $6M for the next year and then 4 years at $9M...or something like that. 10 years at $47M or 3 years at $25M) I would have built around Yang, Bosco and Herrara, all three are young studs.
I think you blew it. but then, I'm stuck on 83 wins for the last couple of years so take my advice with a grain of salt.
If you win a WS in the next three years it was worth it, maybe. If not, bad call.
