A Cancer on Thanksgiving? Topic

I grew up in an alcoholic household, an only child in an environment in which domestic violence was the norm. As kids, we watched our mother's, friends, brothers and sisters beaten and abused by those who were supposed to love and protect us, and for the most part, I have lived exactly the kind of life one might expect from that.
I always had my health. I have been sickeningly healthy my entire life, until this cancer struck me. Not only healthy, but blessed (?) with an order of nerves so low that what was pain to most people scarcely bothered me at all. As a child, bullies were afraid of me, not because of the damage I could wreak, but because I could take so much and not give up.
In January of 2011, I was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma. In April it seemed to be in remission. In July, it returned with a vengeance, compounded by having a Chromosone 17, which makes the Myeloma particularly, unusually aggressive. On this day, I understand, that this is the best thing that has ever happened to me. I stare death in the eyes daily, and I know I am the one who is going to blink. Having to face the light at the end of the tunnel gives one a different perspective. My eyes are open in a new way. My heart is open in a new way. When I talk to my children and grandchildren, I listen better, and speak better. When I walk the dogs, I appreciate my footsteps, their enthusiasm at the silliest things. I appreciate my wife, look forward to each honey-do.
I write this in the hope that a positive change in my life can help someone who may need a little boost. So many people who enjoy this game, as I do, have expressed their love and support, given me encouragement, and I want to thank you. People have given me teams, and gift certificates, people I have never met, who I wouldn't recognize if we sat next to each other. Isn't that  a wonderful commentary on us? Thank you all for adding so much to my life. Although we are invisible to each other, we are here for each other in very special ways, through the vehicle of a simple, maybe even silly (ahem) game. Isn't that just a wonderful commentary on who and what we really are, amidst all the talk of how bad things are? Thank you. I love you all.

Thanks Pfattkatt for sharing your story.  The lesson I learned from you a few weeks earlier will always stay with me.  So your "hope to help someone" took effect long before you put the words down in print, and for this, I thank you.   May God bless you and yours during this holiday season with the gift of love.

Thanks for sharing. I wish I did know you. We are all just visiting Earth.

It takes courage to share as you have with us, pfattkatt. Thank you for doing so, and for helping us see life with a better perspective. What helped me finally get back on track after my 35 year marriage ended was the insight that I wasn't entitled to anything. Life owes me nothing. Once you learn that, every day becomes a continuous prayer of gratitude.

Your posts and your outlook are always inspirational, pfattkatt.  My Mom's side of the family was riddled with cancer (my Mom and both her sisters, my grandfather on my Mom's side, many of my cousins, etc,.) so I've seen plenty of cancer first hand.  I always got my Mom the best treatment in the world for her breast cancers.  She was treated at Johns Hopkins for her first one and was fine for 23 years after that.  She survived her second breast cancer as well, and then she finally got an inflammatory breast cancer that has a poor survival rate.

She had all the required chemo, radiation and surgery and then opted for quality of life and no further treatment.  She enjoyed life to the fullest, and I took her back to New England to visit her old friends and enjoy lobster dinners on the Maine coast.  Modern medicine has now evolved to the point where cancer can be totally pain free, as hers was.  She used to get one weekly shot of what we called liquid gold, because it cost $1,000 a shot.  It was basically EPO, which cyclists take for doping, to keep her red cell count high.  Then she got another monthly shot that we used to call liquid diamonds, because it cost $5,000 a shot.  It was Neulasta, which kept her white count high during chemo.  Her insurance paid for everything.

My Mom lived almost 30 years from her initial cancer diagnosis, often against long odds, and I hope you do the same, pfattkatt.  Keep the faith.

I paid tribute to you with one of my teams because I borrowed several of your roster suggestions -- Count Campau,. Chief Roseman and Sammy Strang.  They played lights out all season and took the wild card with 99 wins coming out of a brutal division that bootone won with 110 wins.  I edged out ligapelota, who had 97 wins, for the WC.  Popfischer rounded out the division with 96 wins.  The less said about my playoff run the better -- my team was tired when it got there.  I ran into brianjw's Silver King team and it was a buzzsaw.

I just joined your theme league with grizzly.

Not nearly as much as you all are an inspiration to me.

I haven't been around very long, but pfattkatt, your story touches my heart. I prayed for you this morning and I will continue to keep you in my prayers. I know a man who was on his death bed this Spring with cancer, but the Lord touched him and now he is healed. That is what I am praying for you.

Thanks for the message, pfattkatt. We could all learn a lesson from you. Happy holiday.
