High Potential but WE = 1 Topic

Curious as to the development of players with a WE of 1.

Recruiting is coming up, and I see a guy with 8 High potentials however, he is carrying a WE of 1.

How much does that low Work Ethic pull down the growth of the player.

As per the old standard, I try to stick with guys who have WE of 30+ but I'm interested as to how you think a player like this may turn out...

Thanks everyone...

A TON.

Roger Hartzog on my Colorado team.  Overall as a freshman: 749, starting soph = 738, junior = 724.  Tons of highs.  He gains 10-15 points per year and then loses 20-25.

take a guy like that ONLY if you are happy with his current skills.  AND keep in mind his hoop IQ will lag behind his classmates too.

Yes.  Mr. Hartzog is a 725-750 PF with great cores, and I needed bigs.  He will never start, but will be a 10mpg guy his whole career.  But I a still happy I signed him (for $4000 at D1, never would have been worth much more).

Wow. Those kind of guys would be way too frustrating. I would let someone else deal with the headache.

Yeah, well, when you coach at Colorado you need to take the good players within 50 miles of you.....even ones that will never improve.

Hartzog is an average backup center in the Big 12, and getting one of those for nothing isn't always easy.

Fletcher is up two or three points for his career, I think.  And yeah - if they're close enough and good enough now, take 'em.  Otherwise, don't.

Okay, true reinsel, there are cases where it may be worth it, but for the most part, I'd stay away.

Thanks for the feedback... It's what I expected.

Sounds as if the frustration of the lack of development isn't worth it, unless you are OK with their core levels when you recruit them.  I didn't consider the IQ development though, so that is a HUGE heads up. (thanks metsmax)

I appreciate everyone's info...

Yeah Hartzog is hitting a B/B- in the middle of his junior year.  I think he was a C+ halfway through his sophomore season.  The cores have to be really good.  But Hartzog for me was worth it.  A PF with a core (over-stm-we-dur) of 600+ is pretty good.
