I'm curious if anyone plays a 3-2 zone and has any success?  I don't see it very often.

A team in my conf. does.  They went to the elite 8 a couple years ago.

The real question is how good at knowing when to switch from 2-3 to 3-2 and what + or - setting to use.  With the help of a couple people WAYYYYY smarter than me at zone, I won a DII NT 4 or 5 season ago- I played almost all 2-3 during conference play, but in noncon and the NT I played 3-2 a ton to mitigate guards that were way better than mine.

I play 60% 3-2 with my Tarleton State squad.

I use the zone with my Lock Haven team and since I started switching back and forth between the 3-2 and the 2-3 my team has had a lot more success. Teams seem to be shooting a lot more 3s than in seasons past and its a lot easier to go to a 3-2 than trying to extend a 2-3. When I go 3-2 I generally stick in the -1 to +2 range. If Im going to be less than -1 then I will switch back to a 2-3 and any more than a +2 is just overkill.

dwoelflin uses a 3-2 at Texas very successfully in Phelan. Before that he did the same at Minnesota.  I think he's had his best success when 1-3 are all very athletic and fast, good defenders too; and at the 4 and 5 they've GOT to be great rebounders and otherwise good defenders.  Speed not as important at those positions, it seemed.  Occasionally he'd switch to a 2-3.

I only run the 3-2 a few times a season against teams with 3 very good perimeter shooters.  I prefer to try to win the boards, which is a more consistent route, than fight against the already more-random perimeter shooting.

I run it quite a bit with my DII S. Arkansas squad, and we went to the NT game and the Sweet 16 the last 2 seasons. I switched between 3-2 and 2-3 quite a bit, probably played a little more 3-2 because I had 2 bigs that could rebound very well.

I love the zone period! I don't understand why more coaches don't run it. I do still have issues game planning with it. I tried switching back and forth but 3-2 just got me killed on the board and inside. Maybe it's personnel issues but I had to stick with 2-3. Anyone have a breakdown of the settings for each zone scheme?

Well actually I love MTM too and I had issues with game planning with it as well before someone decided to break down the settings for me so I don't think I really answered anything here... thanks for the help though??? :-/

I have used it at Emory, but like the press better. I did have very good success with the 3/2 zone. I had a couple of big men that could rebound. I typically would play a 3/2 zone at -1 to -3, and generally double team the opponents best perimeter player. I kept getting knocked out of the NT in the second round every year, despite usually only losing a couple of games in the regular season, so I decided to go to the press, which I have always had better success with, personally. I rarely used the 2/3, and almost always went with the 3/2.

What kind of rebounders did you have with that 3-2?
1/15/2012 2:55 PM
My three centers ranged from 85 to 98 in Reb

At D2 my 4 bigs have 89, 88, 87, and 72 rebounding.
