This may be a dumb question but I don’t know the answer.. How are the following pitching positions used in a game?

Not sure who I should bump down to LONG A?  I was thinking James but I'm fearful that he will get shelled and give up some wins.

AI recomends that Rosales goes to LONG A but he is probably my best SP (I just called him up).

Q. What's the difference between the different pitching roles (mopup, long A/B, LH/RH specialist, setup A/B and closer A/B)?
  A.

The pitching designations represent how you, the manager, would like that pitcher to be used, which may or may not matchup to how the pitcher was used in real life that particular season. Here are the general guidelines:

  • Rest: Only use this pitcher as a last resort
  • Mopup: This pitcher should only be used in blowouts (either winning or losing). Blowout is determined by the deficit (or lead) and the inning, e.g. an 8 run deficit in the 2nd inning would not considered to be a blowout, but the same deficit in the 8th inning would be.
  • Long Relief: This pitcher would be called on in a situation in which the starter is pulled early in the game (6th inning or earlier). A long may also be used later in the game depending on the situation and who is still available in the bullpen.
  • Specialist : These are pitchers who are almost solely used just to get the opposing team's most feared hitter out late in a close game. For example, a left-handed specialist will enter the game to face the opponent's best left-handed hitter (and vice versa).
  • Setup: This pitcher will be primarily used in the later innings, 7th on depending on the situation.
  • Closer: This pitcher will be primarily used in the 8th and later innings, depending on the situation and your settings.

The A/B designation is an additional control for setting pitcher usage. An A designation will almost always be used before a B designation of the same role, e.g. if you have one pitcher set to Setup A and another set to Setup B, the Setup A would receive priority in a setup situation. If both pitchers are set to A, then the SimManager will decide who to use based on the situation (opposing righties/lefties, pitcher fatigue, etc.).

*** Please note that if you don't designate a pitcher for a specific role, you may be sending the wrong (or right) message to the SimManager. For example, if you put all of your bullpen pitchers on rest, that would be an indication to the SimManager to leave the starter in as long as possible, regardless of his call bullpen and pinch-hitting settings. Another example might be setting all of your pitchers to rest except for a closer. This would indicate to the SimManager to leave the starter in until a save situation arises. If the starter is getting shelled in the 5th inning, the SimManager would leave him out there rather than use a closer in the 5th inning. It's recommended to have at least 1 pitcher set for each role. Not having a pitcher available at a specific role may have undesired results.

SIM probably doesn't like Rosales as SP because of his DUR - it could cause problems You may have to watch his pitch count.
I would put James as a LR and hope that you don't need to use him.  You have lots of setup guys.
In fact, I would try to trade James and his contract for someone who is a little thinner at SP assuming I had the requisite depth.

I was going to leave Rosales down in AAA for 1 more season but Mondesi got hurt.  I doubt I could get much for James in a trade.

Long Relief A/B - Long relief pitchers are the first to come in when the starting pitcher is removed early (generally before the 7th) in a game that is still in doubt. These are usually relief pitchers who are capable of pitching multiple innings of relief at maximum effectiveness. Unless settings in the Edit Players Settings page dictate otherwise, the long relief A pitcher will be given first priority to enter a game when this situation arises and the score is still close. If there is a wide margin in the score your long relief B pitcher will have a better chance of appearing in the game. If a long relief pitcher must leave the game during what is still a long relief situation, first replacement priority will be given to another long relief pitcher. For reference, these are also often times spot starters for teams in case of injury.

Setup A/B - Setup relief pitchers are the first to come in when a pitcher is removed late (generally during the 7th or later) in a game that is still in doubt. These are usually relief pitchers who are only capable of pitching an inning of relief at maximum effectiveness. Their appearances are usually higher than any other pitching role, while they may not pitch as many total innings as starters or long relief pitchers. Unless settings in the Edit Players Settings page dictate otherwise, the setup A pitcher will be given first priority to enter a game when this situation arises and the score is still close. If there is a wide margin in the score your setup B pitcher will have a better chance of appearing in the game. If a setup pitcher must leave the game during what is still a setup relief situation, first replacement priority will be given to another setup relief pitcher. Setup pitchers are intended to bridge the gap from starters to closers.

But Ive seen so many of you refuse to use closers.  Wouldnt you want the best possible non-starter seeing the 8th and 9th innings?  Or do you just set up the inning availabilities so that certain Setup A pitchers get specific innings?

Often the best RP is put at closer.    If he's a 41/20 DUR/STM combo, it's no big deal.  But if he's 75/32, you're wasting innings.  That's the thing people don't explain.   What you don't want is your best RP throwing 61 innings when he could have thrown 112.

Maybe I should go with

1) Ramsey
2) Mondesi
3) Xavier
4) Estalella
5) James
LRA: Rosales
SUA: Martinez
SUA: Handsworth
SUA:  Stafford
SUB: Esposito
SUB: Locke
MOP: Harper

There's no way I wouldn't use Rosales as a starter.  Just use James as a spot starter or adjust your other starters as necessary to make sure he doesn't start until he is at 100%.

I use Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Arthur Relaford as a SP.  He's my best guy and he's getting his innings.    The owner before me used him out of the pen.  He got 120 IP, I got 170.

Or to put it another way, the winner of the game is the team that has the highest total of runs summed up across all 9 innings.  It doesn't matter whether the runs were scored in the 1st inning, or the 6th inning, or the 9th inning.  So moving pitchers around to different innings doesn't matter.

If however, your best pitcher could have pitched the 6th, 7th, and into the 8th, but instead you give those innings to a weaker pitcher, and limit your best pitcher to only pitching the 9th (or not at all if the weaker pitchers don't get the job done and you're behind in the game), that would have a definite effect on the total runs and winning/losing the game.
1/31/2012 11:42 AM
There's also a knock-on effect.  The earlier you use your better pitchers, the more likely you are to effect the other team's management settings in such a way that Simmy chooses to use bench players for Rest, or go to a SuB instead of a SuA, or even, if he's using his best pitcher as a "save situations only" closer, avoid ever seeing his best reliever.  So success earlier in the game can impact Simmy's choices later in the game in such a way as to improve your chances of winning.
