I need to fill my back up CF/2B posistion and can't decide which guy to grab.. We're just getting ready to start ST so their slaries are dropping daily.  I ahve the 25th pick in the draft and 1 guys is TYPEA the other is TYPE B.    My plan is for this guy to start at 2B or CF against every LH SP.

Not sure if the TYPE A is that much better that I should give up my 1st pick
2/1/2012 11:22 AM
If he's a back-up, why give up a pick?  I don't even need to look at ratings to figure that one out.

Agree with Mike.  How much leverage is a backup going to give you.  The Type B is not as good, but I'd only go w/ the first guy if you planned to play him a lot and you really needed him.

My CF and 2B have 80 DUR so I'm thinking I would probably get 300AB's out of this guy.   another wrinkle that I just noticed is that the TYPE B is a lefty so I really wouldnt want him playing much at 2B.

If the guy's a backup, definitely don't waste your first round pick on him. There must be somebody cheap on the FA market, who couldn't play every day, but who is stronger against one side of the plate than the other, like this guy:

You might even have a guy like that in your minor league system.

Sign the Type A. 1 yr deal. You'll get a Type A pick back when someone snags him late, with a lottery-ticket chance at a true #1 on top of that.

How cheap has the Type A gotten? If he's down to like $1.8m/yr and he's young enough, I might even give him a multi-yr deal as a backup. He's not a bad everyday starter at 2B against both sides. And several seasons of an excellent 30 PA backup at a good price is worth the 25th pick. Especially if you still get a comp piack back at the end of the contract.

Bonus: Any Type A relievers or catchers whose prices have dropped and would look great on your bench?

Unfortunatley Im not that deep at that position.

I signed thisguy to back up SS/2B/CF vs righties, I'll sign another cheap guy who can hit lefties.   http://www.whatifsports.com/HBD/Pages/Popups/PlayerProfile.aspx?pid=3441353

I'm with Mike.

Me too

One more thing: have you scoured the minor league FA lists?  If somebody hasn't beaten you to it, there might still be a useful backup there.

Looked there to, Thanks
