More Public Worlds? Topic

This is more of a observation than suggestion.  There haven't been any public openings for the last week , and when they are available the world fills in a few days.

Do you think this is a symptom of more new players?  Do new players go to the public worlds because it is easier and less daunting than contacting a commish?  Does HBD need more public worlds?  Do private worlds that consistently have 7 openings need to go public faster?

To me it seems like for a newbie it could be offputting to go to the website and realize that there are no public worlds available.  If you are new there is really no explanation on how to join a private world.  Contact button seems obvious, but I don't see it as that simple.  Having to email a private league to start in HBD seems like an unecessary barrier to me.

Lastly, just to head off those who hate the idea of new worlds.....this truly isn't competition for your spots.  Public worlds always go public and will not need to recruit as much.  They are already filling very quickly almost all the time.  New players just need a place to quickly and easily get into the game in my opinion.  The more new players that start the more  who will take two or three private leagues later.

Thoughts?

I've noticed that public worlds fill quickly.

There are 18 public worlds.  Which means on average, one is rolling every five days or so.

So let's double the number and we'll be good.

Yeah but is the answer creating new worlds and making them public or converting private worlds that can't fill on a regular basis into public worlds?  Or some combo of both?

I think in other threads there has been a lot of backlash to new worlds that have been created lately.  Well since those are private worlds all the same owners are looking thru a limited number candidates who have a solid winning history.  Increasing the user base will require that when a new guy comes to the website from Facebook or Google search or whatever that they have a place to sign up immediately.  The barrier of seeing only private worlds available could make people think twice about playing right away, and who knows if they ever come back?  People rarely become hooked on something until they try it for the first time.  That first time use should be as simple and immediate as possible.

There should ALWAYS be an available public world.   Looking at it from a n00b's perspective, I don't care to wait 6 days for the next available world if I'm checking out HBD for the first time.  A lot of private worlds will tell the n00b "No thanks" because they don't want an alias and/or inexperienced owners.

IOW, create a public world every time there isn't one available in the world center page.   Eventually, the problem solves itself.   Of course, they could become breeding grounds for everything that is wrong with HBD but that's the chance you take.   Either way, you get the new owner into the game.  If the world is complete and utter crap, the n00b may bail or he may like the game, but not the world, and seek another world.

A better solution would be to implement the "training worlds" that we've talked about in the past.

Single season world, maybe 12 teams per world (two leagues of six teams), accelerated off-season, abbreviated schedules (6 ST games, 20 regular season games, 1 round of best of 5 playoffs), and it's free.  When one training world fills, another one gets created, so there's always one available.

Gives n00b's a place to cut their teeth and get a taste for the game before joining a regular world once a spot becomes available.

Well, that could work.  But I'm sure you know that some people would play them hundreds of times.  And probably wreck any learning experience that could come from them.

I'm sure some people would.  But with no credits, no trophys, no recogntion, no anything to show at the end of each of those throw-away single-season training worlds, there's no tangible gain for those who choose to to that.  And no harm done to everybody else playing in regular worlds.

And it does fill a void for those n00bs who are anxious to start playing but there are no openings in a regular world.  Without creating a glut of new public worlds.

Perhaps.  But how off-putting would it be to new owners to have someone curse everyone every day and release all their players 3 days in?

Some people get their jollies by attempting to wreck everyone else's enjoyment.

I can only solve so many problems.

Well, you're 0-1 here.

You're in a pleasant mood today.

Wide awake at 5 AM.  So I went to the gym.   That usually makes me cantankerous in the morning.  Moreso that most mornings.

I don't really think that is a better solution at all.  While I agree that a simplified game on a rolling basis does have merits how similar to the real game are you going to get?  More importantly, how much development is WIS going to need to do to make that a reality?  I would assume that would require a whole re-design of the game, and the users would be using it for free.  That doesn't seem simple at all, and would actually take away from WIS making changes to the existing game.

Public worlds can be created without much hassle for WIS, and those would be paying customers learning, or failing to learn, the real game.  Look right now and there are 4 private worlds that have a combined 25 openings, and 38 private openings total.  There hasn't been a public opening in over a week, and the last leagues that went public had 7 and 4 spots and filled them in a few days.  That equation just doesn't make sense to me.  The solution may be to transfer some poorly performing (retention wise) private worlds to public.  Also IF any new world is created it would also be public as well.

You could argue that the public spots are being filled only by existing users who are jerks and nobody wants to let into their private league, but I just don't think that is the whole story.  Many private leagues just provide the password to the first people that email them.
