I ended up with a really interesting bullpen this year. I had lots of money to spend, but the 2 stud arms and the one stud bat I wanted all went for north of $16M (
BruceDellucci went for 5x$20M + a $10M bonus).
So I ended up with a very nice bullpen (and affordable + short term).
I had
OrlandoBonilla last year, and he was quite nice for me with 118 innings of 1.14/2.74. I had offered him 4X$6M to resign and he wouldn't. He ended up signing with me, very early in the FA process, for 4 years for $21.5M total . He got less than I had originally offered and signed immediately, without really testing the waters. He needs a new agent! He's only 31 and will be my bullpen constant for the next 4 years. I like to have a guy like that.
KevinSodowsky signed for 1X$4.4M Figure 75 innings from him.
KevinMyers and his career 1.04/2.60 signed for $3.4M for a single season. He's a 120 inning guy.
How would you use them? I think I'll go Setup A with both Bonilla and Myers. They should get 210-230 innings between them, with a nice combined ERA. That many innings means my Setup B guys (who are both low cost internal type ($1.5m between), with career ERA's of 4, won't get too much use.
Sodowsky would then close.
I thought about using Myers as a closer and letting him throw in the 8th and 9th innings, too.
I also signed
DannyJohnstone as a long relief guy. He's a bit wild, but I needed an emergency starter who was better than typical AAA fodder. 2 years for $4M total was reasonable insurance, I think. I don't really care how many innings I get out of him, but i wan'ted an emergency starter who wouldn't get shattered..
My steal was trading for
CarlosTavarez , who has a 2.14 ERA over 260 bullpen innings over the last two years. That's a bit better tahn his career numbers, but he's good. He has a 62 Stamina but 30 Durability, so I'm going to turn him into a 90-95 pitch starter. Next year (2 years left/$6M each) he may go back to the pen if my AAA aces come around.
Anyway...I like my pen and my starters are decent. How would you use this bullpen?
