Even at high-level D1, it's not a slam dunk that you can schedule 10 away sims and always make the NT (unless the whole conference is doing it). Believe me, I've tried that with two of my Big 6 teams over the past 4 seasons, on account of their being borderline in talent, and wanting to guarantee enough wins for a .500 record just to be eligible for the NT. And partially to get a really good sense of what you could get away with in the new selection criteria.
The average conference record of those 8 teams was 6-10, average RPI was 40, and I was only 3-for-8 in making the NT. My conclusion is that you're playing with fire using this method unless the whole conference is doing it, or unless your team is good enough that they're sure to make the NT anyway and you know you'll get plenty of quality wins in conference. If you're a bubble team or borderline team, it's a high-risk strategy, but may be your only option if you think you might struggle to get to 13 or 14 wins.
