Redshirting a Player Topic

If I plan on redshirting a recruit, do I need to inform him of it during recruiting?
If I do inform him of it, will it hurt my chances of signing him?  (i.e. could he go from "Considering Us" back to "Undecided" based on me informing him of the redshirt?)

you do not have to inform him of redshirt - I've had somewhere between 70 and 80% of my players accept the shirt when I give it to him without notification and without a drop in work ethic.

It will have a negative recruiting effort and may take you off the considering list. if this happens a home visit should get you back on.

if you try redshirting him and his work ethic drops substantially, you can always take it off and his work ethic will go back to normal.

Thanks, bdpoor.
To follow up, I informed two of my recruits that I was going to RS them; both went from "Considering Us" back to "Undecided"  I offered both a Campus visit the next cycle and one declined the campus visit (as well as two other follow-on Campus visits), and the other accepted and is "Considering Us" again.
Regarding the guy that won't come back for a visit, I withdrew the "Inform of Redshirt" on the last cycle; assuming he goes back to "Considering Us" and I sign him, am I pretty much screwed on redshirting him?  I ask because he is academically ineligible, so it would seem to make little sense to me to not redshirt him, since he can't play anyway (I also won't need him to play, as far as I can tell).

Well, for one, you will only be allowed to redshirt one of them.

And, yes, he will not accept the redshirt.

EDIT: If he is academically ineligible, that is basically a RS. He will still have 4 years of eligibilty **IF!** he comes to your school.

Didn't know I can only Redshirt one.

It doesn't seem like 2 Redshirts would be out-of-line on a 14 man roster.

Just saw that, too... don't know why I thought it was 14... still think 2 Redshirst should be fine :)

And, you cannot RS an ineligible. A player gets a total of 5 yrs to play 4 max. In the future if you want to inform, send a couple HVs along with the inform to counteract the negative recruiting value of the inform...

Another question:  Coming from a lot of experience in GD, this doesn't make a ton of sense to me, but is it common that players that are "Considering Us" won't sign on the first cycle after signings begin, when I have a scholarship offer out to them?

I don't know that its uncommon. They are waiting a bit to see if someone will give them more love. Assuming nothing changes (no one else comes along) he should sign soon.

Once the schollie is extended and they give you the message ackowledging that you are in front they should sign on the cycle following that provided there is not another school being considered.  So if you desire a recruit to sign immediately upon start of signing period you need to offer the scholly no later than the end of the 2pm - 5 pm cycle--this would give you the message acknowledging you in the lead at 5pm and then the recruit will sign with you at 8pm on signing day (provided you are the only school being considered).

If 2 schools in the mix and one falls off the list (presumably because they filled all their schollies) there will also be 1 cycle with just you on the list.

Hope that made sense.

There are some guys that just will not accept the redshirt.  No amount of HV's or CV's will get them back on your list unless you remove the RS

If I plan to use a RS I don't inform the recruit during recruiting.  I RS the guy who's position has the most depth and upperclassmen. I also don't put the player on the depth chart and apply the RS after the first exhibition game.

a few notes

you can often get a guy who stop considering you because of the RS to consider you again just by informing that you will NOT RS - if you want him without the RS

some guys will consider you and not sign

1. be sure you have sent the schollie

2.  they may just barely be considering you - wait one cycle, they may well sign - if not another phone call could be the tiny bit that is enough - and sooner or later they likely will sign because they lower their standards.  Of course, if they are just barely considering you someone else could come along and knock you off rather easily
