I lost a lot of money on a guy I pulled down too slowly in Knight recruiting and ultimately spent nearly $4000 on and lost to a D2 school early on signing day.  I was left with enough money to toss 2 HVs and a scholly at a D3-level player within 200 miles.  I'd already basically locked up 2 guards, so I wanted a post.  I decided to take a shot on a guy with these ratings and potentials:

ATH - 44, low
SPD - 16, high
REB - 54, high
DEF - 39, high
SB - 48, high
LP - 16, high
PER - 26, high
BH - 19, high
Pass - 21, high
Sta - 69, avg
Dur - 22, avg
FT - 60.9%, high

The big problem is that the guy only has 22 WE, so he almost certainly won't cap out all of those highs.  He also has an unimpressive dose of ATH.  So how was this signing given the relative limitations of my position?  I'm hoping to RS him this year and then start him against weaker teams next year (decent starting ATH, REB, DEF should let me do that without getting destroyed) to try to get his WE up as much as possible, and he could easily soar past 600 even without capping out; likely well over 700 with better WE.  But with the limited ATH I'm really not sure how good a player he will become.

He reminds me a lot of a player on my team www.whatifsports.com/hd/PlayerProfile/Ratings.aspx

He has been a solid contributor and big scoring threat off the bench even with his low ATH

Also, how would you set up his practice plan?  He has a 3.1 HS GPA, so I'm going to start him on 0 SH.  Thinking maybe

14 Cond, 12 Reb, 14 FW, 10 LP, 10 PER, 10 BH, 10 Pass, 10 FT

Almost no chance of seeing my guy's LP take off that much even if the cap would be that high since he likely will never get that much practice time concentrated on one category.

If some of those high potentials are high-high I think he'll be a good player. I know ATH is important in this game but sometimes I think it's a bit overrated. There are so many players who lack ATH and are stars in the league.

You could just play him 20+mpg. Your conf is empty and you can lock up a NT spot via CT. Start him every game and play him for 20-25mpg, and he will grow 60-80 points, along with 6-8 points gain in WE.

His LP won't be as high as the guy I listed, but overall many of their cores could end up around the same. I took a flyer on my guy too because he was high-high in a number of areas.

With 50 WE I would like that recruit a lot. Not sure though with 22 WE, better play him a lot early. He kind of reminds me of my backup center:

My guy also came in with high/high/high in REB/DEF/BLK and almost identical starting ratings in those categories. Developing faster than yours will though because of his high WE. He wasn't my favorite signing ever but has become a serviceable rebounder/defender off the bench.

Dahs!

More practice minutes in conditioning/rebounding/defense/LP,  fewer in per/BH/pass/FT(not a scorer, can improve FT later).

Focus on cores first IMO.

He should end up a decent backup/roleplayer type.

Quality Role Player

With 90 Minutes of Practice, I'd likely go:

22 Cond; 18 Reb; 18 FW; 0 LP; 0 Per; 9 BH; 9 Pass; 14 FT

As narcotico said, he's not a scorer (at least not anything close to it right away) so I wouldn't really put time there. Certainly no more than 4  each to start, and probably 0.

If, however, you can get his SPD/REB/DEF/BLK up quickly, I'd have no qualms about playing him major minutes at the 4 (maybe 5, depending on whether it is high-high in Reb) even with the marginal (certainly not *bad*) athleticism.

The 9 BH/Pass are just to get them moving in the right direction and give him some level of protection for when you play press teams.

The 14 FT would be important for me because 1) his current FT% is very poor; 2) he has high potential there; and 3) I tend to have teams that get into the bonus and I just don't want to see him give away too many points at the line.
