Trading for a player with 0 option years... Topic

My mind has drawn a blank...pretty sure I know the answer...just looking for some confirmation.

Player "X" is a prospect in the minors.   Signed a MLB contract after he was drafted but has not yet reached the majors.   He is in his 4th year and thus has exhausted all of his option years.    If you acquire him in a trade - do you have to assign him to your big league team because he is out of options - and then have to risk putting him on waivers if you want to put him in the minors...or can you automatically assign him to a Minor League team?

you'll have to put him in the majors, or expose him to waivers.

That's what I thought...but I was second guessing myself for some reason.

I just messed up doing that. Swapped mL players and I'm scrambling to come up with a way to get him on the big league club.  :)
