Bear with me or feel free to ignore this post, nothing earth shattering just the first time I experienced this after 14,000+ WIS games. OL game, my team has been a bit on the rise but my starting staff was getting slightly fatigued, so I decided to throw a game. Put my AAA starter in who I had not ID'd. Had used him for 6 relief appearances and his ERA was a pleasant 23.63. Used him for one start and he did really well going 8 innings, 2 earned runs for the shocking win. On this day I also rested 5 of my lower PA starters and replaced them with AAA hitters, After ID'ing him AFTER the game I think he is 2008 Mike Hampton, who to put it mildly was pretty stinking bad. He is B stamina which means he is good for 6 innings - RL count was exactly 6 innings - 78 innings/13 starts. I had set his pitch count to 140-150 and rested all my good relievers, but left a couple active just in case he had a start like his last one! So he starts out dealing! Shutting down everyone for 8 innnings. His line was 8 innings 5 hits 0 runs 2 walks 1 strikeout. My team Blarfodam is up 2-0. Up in the bottom of the 9th for my opponent...1932 Tony Lazzeri, Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth. I'd be scared except my measely Hampton had held them to a big 0 for 9. Problem...pitch count. His max pitch count would be about 90 but I had set at 140 with a pull factor of 1. He was slightly over 90 after 8 innings.
Lazzeri steps up and proceeds to hit one out of the park. 2-1. Sparky considers the bullpen and says naw...this guys got it. Gehrig steps up and hits one into the bleachers. 2-2. Sparky has a couple of options, but stays with the exhausted Hampton and you guessed it...Ruth hits the game winning dinger. Back to back to back solo shots to pull out the 3-2 win. I could have done so many things differently to get this win, but I was bound and determined to bury him. Oh well...never seen back to back to back solo homers to win a game.
