How many days to delay an arb year? Topic

I know this has been discussed ad nauseam, but how many games do I need to wait to bring a guy up if I don't want it to count for a season against his arb clock?

20 mL cycles.

I have a question regarding this.

There's 20 or so games left in my season, and I have a SP in AAA that I will call up for sure next season to my ML roster. Is it wise to wait until 20+ games next season to call him up, or call him up at roster expansion this season and just leave him there?

My rule of thumb . . . if your minor league season starts with the AM cycle on Friday, do your promotions after the AM cycle the following Friday.  It may be an extra HBD day or two, but it takes all the counting of days out of the equation.

It depends.  Would you rather have the extra pre-arb year for him, or an extra 8 starts out of him?

If you can/want to make the playoffs, sure promote him.  If there's no chance of the post season, I'd leave him in the minors till next season

20 MiL GAMES is the magic number.  Once a player has that many games in MiL that year wont count as a BL year.

If you have a good chance of making the playoffs in the current year, and the guy in question is a reasonably good improvement over your current guy bring him up, if not wait until the major number next season.

If you have a good chance at making the playoffs in the current year AND the guy in question is a reasonably good improvement over your current guy, you might not want to putz around with 1/8th of your season at less than full strength.      WORST CASE SCENARIO:   You contract-control a player for 10 full seasons.   327/343/360=3.  2 arb=5.  5 year deal=10.   If he's 22 years old, you have him until he's 31.   If he's a position player, he's likely to start declining at 32(the next season).   And he may re-sign with you after his 10th season anyway.   So what's the point in holding him back when you could actually USE him for a playoff season run?
