I'm sure this has been beat to death, but it's absurd that career minor leaguers or borderline major league journeyman demand contracts that don't reflect reality.    They price themselves out of the market entirely.  There should be more demand driven free agent pricing structure than arbitrary pie-in-the-sky contract demands by marginal players with almost zero basis to back those demands.  There are players that should be on rosters, but are basically eliminated from consideration due to their initial (& often sustaining) ridiculous demands in relation to their real values.  Career minor leaguers demanding multimillion dollar contracts makes zero sense and basically creates a self-imposed banishment from the game.

Which is the way it should be.   Career minor leaguers have minimal value, right?   So, if they're 10 year pros and not good enough to be on a 40, isn't it time they walk away?   This isn't Bull Durham where 39 y/o catchers are aiming for the minor league HR record(unless, of course, you're burning a spot on the 40 to keep them around).

Don't disagree they shouldn't walk away at some point in their unglorious career, but not based on totally insane initial contract demands.  That should be due to pure lack of interest by owners based on their lack of skills, not ridiculous contract demands that don't mimic reality.  I understand the long-in-the-tooth Johnny Damon's and Vlad Guerrero's types asking for more than they are worth based on their age, prior contract and actual value for that point of their career.  They don't need to make money per se.   My concern is that the career border line "AAAA" type player asking for a ridiculous amount when he is worth basically the league minimum right out of the gate in initial free-agency.  This essentially drives him out of the league prematurely.  In reality, those type of players are generally just  "happy" to be in the big leagues, not demanding four years at $5M per as a career minor leaguer with a cup of coffee in the majors.  That does not make any sense at all.  How do the Jaun Castro's, Joe Biemel's and Ross Gload, etc.  types stay in real majors for 10 or 15 plus years, by asking for $5M per mutli-year.  I don't think so.

Not all of them ask crazy amounts.  Just a few.    They weren't good enough to be kept on a 40 man but they are good enough for us to want them as "insurance".   That's why you need depth in the minors.   For insurance.    And, surprisingly, some actually get BL contracts.

Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: David Pendleton was ridiculously bad draft pick by me.   After a few BL AB and no chance of ever making my BL club, I took him off my 40.   He demanded 4.5m or something.   Got over 2m.   One man's trash.......
