There should definitely be a tie-breaker play-in game for the major league level. Minor league it is fine to go to tie breakers, but MLB should be decided on the field.

It would be tough to program that in to a fixed schedule format.

What if there were a 3-way tie?

I believe in a 3way tie in MLB, they use the tie breakers to decide whom the 2 teams are that will play in the 'game'.

In real life (before this season) only 8 teams made the playoffs.

Haven been in a 3 way tie for 2 spots and lost on a tiebreaker, I agree it can be cold, but if after 162 games in this sim, and the records are identical, you can either take the coin flip of 1 game, or the tie breakers that look at a full season.
