I've always wondered something about this. What if I called the player up the previous season after roster expansion, but then sent him back to AAA after the regular season ended? So he was placed on the 40 late in the prior season, and remained on the 40 through the offseason, would waiting a minor league (real-life) week to promote them in the current season still save a year on the arb clock?

No, because he still has days accrued from the previous season.

If he accrued 25 days of MLB service time the previous season (for example), then you'll want to wait 25 minor league days before you do your promotions.

A clarification: the length of the MLB season in HBD is something like 178 days.  In terms of ML service time, I believe 172 days is a year of ML service.  But any minor league assignment of less than 20 days counts as ML service time.  Which is why you can't call a guy up after only 7 ML days have passed (to give him 171 ML service days), because (7 < 20) and those 7 days would still count as ML service time.
