Roster Expansion: Count Against the MLB Clock? Topic

If a guy gets his first innings in the ML as a call-up for roster expansion, does that start his arbitration clock?

I'm not sure what the point of it is, if so.

Yes, it counts.  I usually bring up guys that are less than prospects, guys that might help give depth for a month but I don't care about their arb clock.

Yes.

The point is to either 1) get playing time with better coaching 2) help your BL team win 3) reduce fatigue issues with your BL players.

Roster management, and cost management, are part of the game but, sometimes, winning games, developing players and protecting players from injury is a part of the game also.

OK, I'm in a giving mood.

A player can be "controlled" for 11 seasons.   Say you bring up a 24 y/o player.   24, 20 games in.   3 more years at minimum cost.   2 years of arb.   5 years with LT deal.     When the last contract is done, he's 34.   If he's a position player, he's already on the downside.    There's really no reason to putz around with cost management once a position player is 22.

It's a little different with pitchers.

The other thing is that you can give a guy 15 days on the ML roster at expansion and if you want to delay his clock, you still only have to wait 20 games in the following season to call him up (assuming you ship him back to the minors at the end of the year).

Pretty sure roster expansion is 26 days.

Doesn't mean that you can't just give him 15

Actually probably even 17, since 20 minor league days = 22 ML days iirc.

Well, your answer creates another question for a guy who is 22-50 in his HBD career.    Seems like you're not helping.

Thanks Mike.

Why is that, deanod? I don't understand why that would work like that.
