Pitchers underperforming Topic

I work very hard on building all of my teams and  really don't spend alot of money playing this game.  I enjoy the WISC and I work hard on selecting my teams.   I don't do well and I don't always understand why certain players/teams preform and others don't  I have read through some forums and they have certainly helped.    But i really don't understand what happens when  draft a player whose WHIP is 1.03 for 174 innings  and he pitches 176 innings for a season and never gt his WHIP below 1.15.     What part of the pitcher rafting am I missing.  I'm oviously overlooking something but what?

Some initial thoughts:

1.  Check out everything you can find about Normalization; all 1.03s are not created equal.
2.  Parks affect performance; a high-singles park will adversely affect pitcher performance - and while you may play in a pitchers' park, the majority of your league may not.
3.  Although it may seem like a lot of innings, 176 really aren't; it's a relatively small sample size.
4.  In-game fatigue may be an issue, if your pitch counts are too high.

I think all players are going to underperform on average.  The 80 million cap makes the quality of competition higher in open leagues than it is in MLB (though I'm not sure by how much).

Dalefan1 - we have all been through this.First of all, are you referring to the pitcher's WHIP his real-life playing year, or his normalize WHIP - WHIP#  or his WHIP+ ?

The latter tells you how his WHIP compared to his league average that year and the former to how he would be expected to perform against an average opponent adjusted relative to all of baseball history.

Also, remember that here that same pitcher faces Babe Ruth 1929, Cy Williams 1923, Sisler, Boggs, Brett, Howard Johnson 1989 etc. etc. every start. When he pitched, maybe Horace Clark or Bud Harrelson were more likely batters. That will do wonders for pitching stats.

So almost no pitcher, even the best, match their historical performance. Addie Joss '08 is pretty likely to have an ERA here under 3.00 but not always under 2.00. Same for Pedro, or Bob Gibson etc.

But check out the Progressive Leagues. It is more like real life baseball and the players performances are more likely to be closer to what they did when they played. See the Progressive Classifieds for some that are looking for owners to take over teams. You might have more fun there. I have just started in some Progs. and already swear by them. Plus, everyone has a spell of losing years and needing to rebuild. So you feel a little less pressure to succeed. I see you made the playoffs. Great. Don't devalue that: it is hard to accomplish here. And your record if you compare it then to say the real world Cubs, or Padres, or Royals etc. doesn't look bad at all. At least that is what I tell myself.

A friend who recruited me to a progressive league told me when I complained about how bad the team I took over was "It is normal - every team has holes in its lineup and roster in progressives, just like the depth or lack thereof of real teams."

I hated to tell him I am a Yankees fan. Our idea of having holes is to have Soriano and Robertson if Rivera gets hurt and to have to rely only on Chad Curtis, Shane Spencer, Daryl Strawberry, Chili Davis and Ricky Ledee to cover LF because you don't have a Bernie Williams or Paul O'Neill to put there !

Seriously. If you want to keep playing in the OLs keep working at it and do the homework. If you want baseball where the low ERA or WHIP of a good pitcher might mean they are valuable, go with the progressive leagues.

Their posts came in as I was writing mine, so I had not seen them before, but listen to what jm1618 and pinotfan are telling you. They are giving you good advice.

these progressive leagues sound very fun.   every year i put myself through the love/hate of playing the WISC.  I always do poorly but I also always beat my ranking.  I think I will be switching to progressive leagues but I am also looking to preform better in the WISC so I'm looking at all routes possible improvements to my team building strategies.

I know two leagues that need owners: the Random Rookie League, which chooses a different year by a random process each season to choose new players from, and the SS/HH league - Sultan of Swat and Hammerin' Hank - because it goes through the career years of those two players, moving one year at a time. So we are now at 1923 and 1973 and all players are from those two years. Next season will be 1924 and 74 and so forth.

Both leagues need just one owner to get started with our latest draft, so you won't have long to wait if you sign up.

Sitemail swtbc for the Random Rookie League

Sitemail mensu1954 for the SS/HH league if you are interested and they can tell you more.

But also look at other progressives looking for people in the Progressive Theme League Classifieds Forum.

I'm having trouble understanding your objection here. A 1.15 WHIP instead of 1.03? Would it not be boring if everyone ended up on game 162 with stats identical to those they had in real life?

08 Joss - no homers in real life - has three (3!) homers for my OL team. Meanwhile my team has a real-life whip of 0.89 but a 1.33 whip for me.

I agree with you on that tea party.   I guess what I'm looking for is what stat or ability I'm suppose to be looking at that i'm not to build more consistent teams.   I hope that makes sence.   I'm sure it's not all luck it's got to be something I haven't found yet.

Here's a question for you: How many PAs and IPs do you draft?
6/4/2012 1:51 PM
well for instance in my recent 90 mil league  have 1,520 IP an 6200 AB..... you think im gong overboard?  and im sorry i didnt get back to you sooner  you know how life gets in the way.

6/6/2012 7:57 PM
1520 IP and 6200 AB (did you mean PA?) are way more than you need. If you buy fewer PA and IP, you can afford higher quality players, and therefore a better team. People have differing opinions on exact amounts, but you could probably drop AT LEAST 150 IP and 500 PA - probably considerably more as you learn to manage your roster.

If all your guys are always 100%, you probably have too many PA and IP.

Do you use your AAA players?

6/7/2012 12:19 AM
no i rarely use them.   after playing in WISC where you cant use AAA i try not too.  I have always had a fear of using tired players and that hurting my perffromance i never thought I was going to far the other way

6/7/2012 1:28 AM
got to us them AAA guy you can get a lot better player with 450-600 PA & use AAA fill in some game,Then get a worse player with 600-750PA and playing him all the time
Me have a reg player on most my teams he has only 487 pa bat him number 9 and fill in with AAA or $200K scruby & he puts up great numbers
