Two games played in 1 cycle? Topic

I checked the game results today and was shocked to see two games played this morning at the 6/4 cycle. I guess I overlooked it when game planning and luckily I won both. How often does this happen, is it something that should have a ticket sent in?

it happens from time to time. if you send a ticket ahead of time, they will move one game (presumably to slot 11). once simulated, its too late.

the reason it happens has something to due with WIS needing to schedule 10 games per team, and they somehow get themselves in a position where they cannot. i thought about it one, but i didn't see a clear simple algorithm that guaranteed all teams have 10 games, although with the number of unscheduled sims, im virtually positive it is possible, and without unreasonable difficulty. seems like you can do a maximum matching (which can be done quickly) on each game slot, which would find you 10 pairs for everybody (you really don't even need game 11), but then you need an addition constraint that no pair shows up twice in the 10 matchings. i can't think of how to enforce that constraint, off the top of my head. you could simply remove edges from the matching based on the solutions of previous matchings... but in a sufficiently sparse environment (few unscheduled spots), that is definitely not guaranteed to find a solution, if one exists.

still, the above, given maybe 20-40 teams unscheduled, is probably enough to find a perfect solution (everyone has 10 games, plays nobody twice, all in slot 1-10) 99.999% of the time. you should be able to solve all fringe cases with a game 11, but that would be the last step, and i would expect that over the life of HD, which has maybe a few million or so non conference games (10 games times about 1000 schools times 10 worlds times about 60 seasons each, divide by 2 because every game is now counted twice, is 3 million), you would still be unlikely to have a game 11... but i could be wrong.
