i read some faqs and old guides that say it is, but they are pretty outdated and i couldnt find anything recent talking about it in search

It's definitely not meaningless for guards. It helps quite a bit to increase scoring efficiency.

The FAQ's and guides all precede the newest version of the engine (and in some cases might even predate the potential era...not sure). When the new engine arrived, LP began to have relevance for guards. If you check the devchat archives, the one that deals with changes under the new engine will have whatever comments seble made at the time on this matter (and others).
