Tight @ D1 *Recruiting Question* Topic

So I am in my first D1 recruiting period and it is definitely different than D2/D3. How much effort is required to get a recruit tight with you? There are two players SIM AI teams are tight with him I have a prestige advantage (D over D-).

Any help is appreciated so I don't blow all my money and end up with no recruits.

Thanks in advance

I think "tight" is somewhere around 20-25 HV or the equivalent.

i'd strongly advise you to move on.  at your level there are other similar enough players that you can find without wasting your money in a battle.  your prestige is barely better and you're not going to get much of a boost from that.

the minimum to get tight with a local guy is about $10k....but as far as I know there is no guarantee that the Sim only put in enough effort to just barely get tight.  They don't recruit enough guys to fill their spots so my guess is that (assuming you're even local) you're going to be dumping significantly more than 1 scholarship's worth of cash into this one player.  If you're not local, you could be dumping a couple scholarships worth of cash into this player.  IMO that's just a waste of money when you only have 3 open scholarships to begin with because you won't be able to defend anyone later if other players come calling to try and take one of your guys away from you.

Thank you for the advice

gsvu - i think you got some bad advice. no offense or anything. there is some truth to that - if the other school is very tight, and you can find an equally good player, go elsewhere. but i assume you already know that, and thus am assuming, these players are better than your other prospects.

with sims, its all about distance and primary targets. its a safe bet, with the prestige of these sims, you are looking at their primary targets (given the tight message). that could definitely cost you a good 10-20k. however, if you really want the player, you can almost for sure sign them for at absolute most, 25-30k, assuming <360 miles, and less if <200 miles, and typically you will be pretty safely under that mark. you do want to avoid long distance battles with sims but they can certainly be won, and often are. if a player is NOT a sim's primary target, they are very easily picked off.

sims are generally easy prey. if they are within 360 miles, even a B prestige sim player can fairly easily be stolen. sims don't work off money like the rest of us, and im not convinced their prestige works the same either. however, you can get a good feel after enough battles, and i suggest battling them when possible for that reason. i would DEFINITELY not discount these recruits merely because of that puny sim, the most feeble of opponents...

bad advice?  i don't think you can determine that at all.  you make some valid points, however i think i do too.  the reality is that we don't know what players we are even talking about here (and i don't blame him for not sharing that info).  however, i think there are enough similar players at that level that you can find without battling and try to make sure you have some money for the "what if", no pun intended...or at worst to carry over to next season.  there are a ton of project players out there to be had which is realistically what you're looking at with a D prestige anyway.  you're building for the future.

if the players in question are not local, this is a different story.  if the players in question are on the higher end of the project scale, there's no way to know if a beleagured big 6 school with a ton of cash and mid level prestige will come calling towards the end of recruiting when their better targets have been picked off by the big boys right before signing.  could you overtake the sims?  sure you could.  but it's going to be expensive and there's no guarantee that someone else with even more money wont jump in at the last minute...and then what?  you end up taking a guy 3 or 4 steps below his quality instead of a guy that might be a half step below if you were to move on now.

sure there is always the risk that another school could jump in on your guys no matter what...but at least in my scenario you have some cash and a chance to fight them off or cut bait and move on again.

i think its silly to call it bad advice.  it's different than what gillispie would do, and that's fine, I just think that when you've got a roster of 8 or 10 pretty good players you can take more chances on guys.  what i've done has worked for me in building lower prestige D1's and i'm sure what gillispie has suggested has worked for him.  there's more than one way to skin a cat.
