Defensive Match-ups Topic

Not sure where the proper place to put this is, but one development I'd love to see the ability to select defensive match-ups especially in a man defense. It seems unreasonable that you have to choice offensive execution or defensive matchup when setting your depth chart. If I have a star defender who can defend 1 - 5, I want to be able to throw him on the other team's star player without having to move him in the offensive line - up. This would also benefit zone and press by allowing coaches to set arrangements such as allowing you to move a great defensive 3 to the top of the zone or press instead of what I perceive to be a classic  1 2 top and 3 5 4 bottom of a zone and a 1 2 top 3 4 mid and 5 deep press. While it might not be used by every coach, I feel that it would make game planning deeper and more interesting. While I am not looking for ultra real game play because basketball and sports in general can only be recreated mathematically to a certain point, small changes like that would be nice.

Agree. Another WIS game (SimLeague Football) even lets you do situational offense and defense (i.e., they come out in this formation, play this defense). Thus, the developers at WIS certainly know how to do a simpler arrangement where you can have 1 positional limeup for O and 1 for D.

That said, I am guessing there are few players who can guard 1-5 (but it would help alot between guards and lp matchups) and there should be some restriction on that. WIS expressly ignores height and weight which would make shifting players 1-5 problematic as you can have the most ahtleticly gifted, fast, and defensively talented guard in the world, but he couldn't guard Shaq or Dwight for very long. The engine doesn't consider that though so there should be some limit to moving players outside of their natural positions for defensive purposes. Otherwise, you'd have a 6 foot athletic guard with 99 defense able to shut down someone top lp player.

How about if someone starts at pg they can only guard up to the 3(sf), start at sg can guard 1-3(pg,sg,sf), start sf can guard 2,3,4(sg,sf,pf), start pf guard 3,4,5, start at C guard 3,4,5. I guess who the sf could or couldn't guard in my scenario may be a sticking point, perhaps small forwards could guard any position. And when I speak of starting position it could mean where they start offensively or based on their pre-selected positions by whatifsports. Anyway, I like the idea of separate defensive matchups and think it could balance things some between the great recruiters and great game planners. Of course those that excel at both will still be champions.

I like that fatchance although I would heavily favor using starting position on the depth chart over WIS position, given the fact that WIS doesn't really account for skill set. I mean you'd still be able to game the system but that's probably as close as you can get.

Can we add a box-and-1 along with this for the zone defense?
