Why is everyone and their brother from Africa named Dikembe? Did they run out of names?

This is a sociological phenomenon not limited to africa. When someone reaches celebrity status, very often that person's name ends up being used by parents from the geogrphic location where said celebrity hails. It could be a display of admiration or - like so many americans copying the names of celebrity babies - the trendy thing to do. Either way, a generation later, you see an influx of adults with names of former celebrities.

For those that missed it, this is intended to be a lighthearted, semi-sarcastic response...

Unlike alot of em though, Dikembe Mutombo isn't just famous there because he's a basketball player.  Pretty good guy in general.  Alot of charity work.

not exactly as shining a star as he once was though, what with his involvement in a scheme to smuggle tons of conflict gold out of Congo...

Wow, for a $10 million investment, that's a crappy presentation.

Scar Mutombo would be awesome

As annoying as the endless Dikembes are, it doesn't hold a candle to the fact the all the Korean players have Chinese names...

or that all the canadiens have american names!
