Based on my knowledge, you call the recruit or the coach first. Some prefer calling the coach, others like calling the player. If he gives you a "backup" message, you perform scouting trips on the recruit. I think someone has mentioned that 10 seems to be the magic number more often than not. However, I believe it's taken some more than that before they get the message that the kid will take normal recruiting. I've been leary of performing this process myself, as I've taken over a C- prestige and worry about higher D3 and D2 teams getting interested in the guy I want. I wish you the best of luck though, and hopefully you're successful in your endeavors.

Oh, and if he gives you the cold shoulder, rejecting your call, or flat out laughs at you in the response, move on. You'll never get him to consider you.

It could be 10 scouting trips, it could be 5, it could be 20 or 30.  Lots of coaches do it in blocks of 5 or 10.  The reason for using scouting trips instead of any other kind of visit, by the way, is that the recruit can't refuse them.  You just show up at his games.  You get recruiting credit for that.  He can't refuse materials through the mail either, but there's just not enough "effort" there to make it worthwhile.

supersloth33 is right, also, that unless you get a backup message, you have *no* shot and should not put any more effort into the player.  Just remove him from your list.

I would start with guys 70 miles or less as well.   These guys are more likely to be pulled down AND they are cheaper.
