Relief Settings Specialist Topic

So I currently have a 2 man rotation, 650 IP/450 IP, its a higher cap league so in my pen I have a spot start and 200+ Inning guy who I need to be the primary reliever.

So my primary question is about Specialist roles. He obviously is capable of pitching to more than 1 or 2 batters each game, and so what im wondering is if i set him to LH Specialist (according to settings call rate of about 50%) will he automatically be the #1 option for sparky and will sparky leave him in for more than the one or two lefty's? I of course have him on a higher pitch count, about 50-60 and a pull rating of 1.

So is it better to put him in a specialist role or just keep him Set up A and everyone else Set up B and assume the recent games have just been a fluke.

Thanks for the responses

IMO...

I would set the 200 IP guy to LONG A, available in any inning.

Anyone I don't want to pitch would be LONG B. (Assuming your 200 IP LONG A guy is the best, you can code everyone else as LONG A as well, Sparky will use the best first).

If you have TRUE closers or set ups, use them.   They will not replace the LONG A guy as long has he hasn't hit his IP.

As an example, in a progressive league, IP breakdown has me using a 3 man rotation of 300 IP starters, and '95 Maddux as a "superman Long A".  I have other guys in the bullpen, but nobody (of course) as good as Maddux.  So he's Long A, as is everyone else.  Sparky will use Maddux as first choice, using him for his 60 PC role if needed.  Nobody will replace him.  If Maddux is unavailable, then Sparky will use one of the other Long A guys as I have them defined.

Works like a charm.

Ok, this helps a little, However I made a typo, Randy Johnson has been in Long A with all my other guys in Set Up B and Closer A. They have been going straight to Set ups while  my starters have only gone 5-6 innings the last few starts. Forcing everyone to be fatigued now and johnson untouched. So i was wondering if specialist role would simply increase his outings as I have never used the setting.

Nope.  You have your set ups available too early.  If I want my Long A guy to get work, I won't let set ups pitch before 8th inning, and closers before 9th.

That helps a bit. I think I have most of my guys available at 6-7 so makes sense. Thanks

I never use Long A or Long B.  VERY rarely will I use the specialist set ups.   My guys are set to set up A or set up B, and almost always accompanied by a closer.

But this results in Maddux being wasted in a lot of blowout games, doesn't it? How is it a better option than just putting him in the starting rotation?
