Sorry to complain, but I really hate this.  I had the lead the entire way on a kid and the cycle right before signing an A+ prestige school dropped cash on a recruit (I'm a B prestige program).  The kid goes from me being the only school he had considered to me not even being a consideration anymore.  Of course, he signed with the A+ prestige school the following cycle.

I wish there was some way where WIS would implement that the kid at least would have still considered me to give me a fighters chance.  I dumped 12k into the kid and am closer distance wise to the kid then what the A+ school is so I'm not sure how much he threw down but I doubt he pumped as much money into the kid as I did.

Haven't seen a "poaching whine" thread in a while. People need to get over this nonsense, FYI I'm sure he put in more than 12k simply because prestige doesn't mean much at the D2 level, so his prestige edge wouldn't allow him to just blow you away. Recruit isn't yours until he signs, heck just now a coach in my own conference jumped on a recruit and knocked me off the list at the 8pm cycle, and I couldn't care less. Not the first time a coach in my conference has done it, it's part of the of the game and intelligent recruiting strategy.

I think that it would be cool if there was some sort of loyalty, like the team that got in on a kid first gets more credit (or maybe that already exists in the engine). It would mimic real life, where recruits build a relationship with a coach from early on in the recruiting process and often give more credit to those who recruited them from the beginning...

It does, but it appears to be minimal. Going to the initial post, not sure what a "sure bet recruit" is. No recruit is yours until he signs.

There is no such thing as poaching.  Mason is correct, at the D2 level prestige is not nearly as much of a factor as at D1, so I would agree that he did, in fact, spend nearly as much, if not more, than you did on the recruit.

Stine is also correct, there is no such thing as a "sure bet" recruit.  Not until he signs.  Sorry to be harsh, but we've all had this happen to us at one time or another, so just letting you know in advance, you probably won't get much sympathy from the audience.

There is supposed to be considering credit built in, but no one seems to know how much of a factor it is.  Some think it's minimal (I tend to belong to this camp) and some think it's a noticeable factor.

$12K seems like a fair amount in D2 to not get overrun immediately like this though, no? Been a while since I've been there...

that's what upsets me about this.  I agree there is no such thing as a sure bet recruit and I shouldn't have used that terminology but it seems that way when you drop that much money on a kid in d2.  live and learn, it sucks but we'll be fine.

heres the real question - how did you spend that 12k? if you spend 12k on a recruit EFFICIENTLY, this shouldnt have happened. it almost sounds like this guy had to be over 360 miles from you, and you had to dump most of that money in evals, which really isn't worth much as all (evals are low value, and lower still when the player hasn't dropped yet). so if i had to guess, i wouldnt hesitate to guess the 12k figure was very misleading.

To knock you off from further away he had to have spent easily over $15K.  He deserves the guy for that.
9/3/2012 2:11 AM
He'd probably spent some along the way, really.  Had to have known somehow that he needed that kind of volume of spending to knock you off.  I doubt it was actually all done in the last cycle, just hadn't spent enough until then to get on the list.

TRrrr   FWIW ... CSUDH showed being considered by Fretwell TWO cycles before signings ... and also, FWIW, attempting a pulldown, CSUDH had 14 ST's for Fretwell (at $595 a pop!) BEFORE C. Washington showed up as being considered. Then we waited until he ...

Appreciate the game, TRrrr...you only will need special security for Fretwell as the fan base is unhappy with his decision. Looking forward to it though!

TRrrr   SO if spending over $8,000 on 14 ST's trying to pulldown said recruit BEFORE Central Washington showed up being considering ... and then waiting until he dropped to my DII list and getting back in ... makes me a poacher ... then guilty as charged!!

for the record, I'd love to see you change the title of this thread to something less confrontational like, "recruiting discussion" or some such. There is no poaching. Protect your recruits until they sign. If you can't deal with the consequences of not being able to do so, you might consider a different hobby, because this is bound to happen again...

the other coach mentioned trying 14 evals to pull down, I'd bet most of the OP's 12k was pull down evals too.

OP - Evals have a recruiting value, but it isn't great, and it is even lower when the evals are being used to pull down a recruit.

I had put in 25 scouting trips, the recruit was 310 miles away from me. (C. Washington).  That had him interested in me and then I dropped occasional money into him through each cycle as nobody else was around and I just wanted to "ensure" he stayed.

I'm not sure when he started considering the other school but I did not get an email from the kid until the signing period cycle that stated he was looking elsewhere and at that point I was completely off of his list.

It's not something to be upset about, I guess I was just more confused as to it seemingly happened in one cycle.  Kind of out nowhere.
