Fooling around with the site waiting for the season to rollover. Was looking at my team's "success".
In my long stretch at my D3 program, I've been fortunate to have been awareded a #1 NT seed 13 times.
I managed to win a national title once. So maybe I'm not a complete idiot to coaching in the postseason. Maybe.
Here are the results of those 13 tourneys:
- 1 national title
- 1 championship game
- 1 Final Four
- 3 Elite Eights
- 4 Sweet 16's
- 3 2nd Rounds
No first round flameouts -- amazingly -- but I'm more likely as a number 1 seed to fall short halfway through the tourney than I am to get past the midway marker. Given the favorable opponents one gets with the seed, that seems to be a rather remarkable job of choking on my part.
My expected win total in those 13 tournaments is 27 wins more than I actually have achieved. So on average, I'm losing 2 rounds earlier than you'd expect from a #1 seed. And that's even with having won the NT in one of those seasons.
I know in general it's hard for a #1 seed to get the wins to match the seeding, but my futility seems to be taking it to a new level.
