So I'm trying to decide between 2 different bullpen management strategies, and I was hoping for some advice. Is it better to utilize a traditional bullpen strategy in which following the SP would be a LR (if necessary) followed by setup pitchers, and a closer? Or would it be better to utilize a top to bottom approach in which your very best RP comes into the game at any given time regardless of the inning/score? Both strategies will place more innings on your best RPs and fewer innings on your worst RPs, but it seems like the second option would do a better job of exaggerating this effect by maximizing the number of innings pitched by your very best RPs. For example, if using your very best RP as a closer, he might get between 50-80 innings in a season and around say 50 save opportunities. However, if that same pitcher were always used as the first out of the Pen you could potentially increase the number of innings pitched up to 100 or more. Wouldn't this strategy lead to a lower team WHIP, OAV, and OBP than a traditional bullpen strategy over the course of a season? But would it lead to more wins?
