Baseline Prestige??? Topic

Can someone please explain what is meant by "baseline prestige" and how that differs from team prestige?

As i understand it:

Consider baseline prestige a "set point" prestige that your school tends to drift back towards. Your performance can drive your prestige above or below this set point but all other things being equal, that set point is going to exert a pull towards it.

baseline prestige is something that applies in d1, only. for example, kentucky has an a+ baseline prestige. meanwhile, a low end conference mate like south carolina might have a b- prestige (all BCS schools are b- or better). maybe south carolina is a B, not sure, but thats not really the point. anyway, current prestige in d1 (aka team prestige) is the result of the combination of 3 things: 1) team success, 2) baseline prestige, 3) draft picks

i only include #3 because it ultimately affects your prestige for that season (ONLY), but the prestige you see when worlds roll over, and on the team page, those do not include draft pick results. anyway, to continue the example, say south carolina and kentucky have the exact same resume, over the last 10 years, they made the NT each year, with a few s16s sprinkled in. south carolina might have a B+, where kentucky might have an A. this difference would result purely from the baseline prestige difference.

i believe low end d1 schools go all the way down to a d- baseline, but the mid majors are basically sprinkled between b- and d- (for example, all a10 schools are b-). there are a couple fairly accurate lists of baseline prestige out there. you cannot change your baseline prestige, and baseline prestige makes it impossible to go 2 full grades below the baseline (example: UNC can never go below a B-), and it also makes it harder to go 2 full grades above, but you can do it. mostly, you see schools within a letter grade of their baseline, but significant success or significant badness can definitely push you outside that range.

just to be clear, team prestige is the only thing that impacts recruiting. baseline is a component but has no direct impact. if you have 2 A prestige schools and they are the same A within the A range, it doesnt matter if one has an A+ baseline and the other has an A-, they are the same in the eyes of the recruits.

actually, conference prestige is also a factor, sorry for leaving that out. but like baseline, it plays into team prestige, and has no direct impact in recruiting.

Gillispie, that was very helpful.  How do you find out a team's baseline prestige?

its not listed anywhere in game, but there are a couple forum posts with lists, i would try to search for baseline prestige in the forums or something.

My take on Baseline Prestige is it is the crutch that keeps long-time customers as customers and prevents the game from growing or being much fun.  You may get other answers elsewhere and they are probably more correct, but ultimately, baseline prestige says customers who have played the game from the start are playing basketball on a 6 ft hoop (man, that is fun) and new customers will be playing the same game on a 14 foot hoop.  I will say that for me, it appears that within 40-50 seasons you will transition from the 14ft hoop to the 6ft hoop and then you get to have all the fun.

Figures you would say this and of course, it's not even CLOSE to being correct.  I didn't start when the game was first put out and I didn't have any problem making it to the top.  If you did, it probably says more about YOUR ability to play the game than the game's supposed "shortcomings".

But since you chose to comment and belittle all the long time coaches, saying they have all these built-in advantages, why don't you take it a little further and actually EXPLAIN why you think the long-time customers have so much of an advantage over a new customer?  Because I can name several coaches who started in the last two or three years who are amongst the best in the game and didn't need 40-50 seasons to get there.

As soon as you take a d prestige div 3 team and turn that into a div one champion in the same calendar year, then we can talk.  Until then, wake up to reality and quit pretending your good at something besides sticking around for longer than most.  Even you have talked about the issues associated with baseline so just because I have an email that shows your true colors, no reason to try to discredit my point of view-- I think I did that myself in the post.  Why do I get the feeling that you have my picture plastered all over your parent's house?

You still have that sitemail, the one that I responded BACK to you after you called me some less than "flattering" names?  Let's be real here about who sent whom a sitemail first.  Don't try to play all high and mighty, you're the one who fired the first shot.  Sorry if you got your thin skinned feelings hurt, but you send a message calling someone a "douche", don't be offended when you get one back calling you far, far worse.  In fact, why don't you post the whole conversation and let everyone see YOUR true colors?  How long ago was that, at least a year?  And you still have that?  Wow, who is really the stalker?

It's not, really.  But any time anyone starts a thread about prestige of any sort, this guy shows up and says how wrong it is and how all the veterans have a built-in advantage and that new coaches have no chance to win and might as well just stop playing right now, blah, blah, blah.  Yet, he never actually offers any reasons why veteran coaches are insulated and why a new coach can't win.  Then, when shown examples to the contrary, he gets mad, leaves in a huff, mumbling and grumbling about the Baby Boomers and how it was better back in his day during the Great Depression, shoots off a nasty sitemail, and is stunned, shocked even, to find that someone might have responded to his sitemail with one of their own.  One that might not be all warm and fuzzy and cordial.  If I didn't know better, I'd swear it was a Fredpaull alias.

Oh, and I guess this computer genius doesn't realize that any sitemail that I receive, can be edited and made to say anything that I want it to say.  So, this damning sitemail message that he STILL has, that I supposedly sent him over a year ago (which is scary unto itself that he would keep it so long, never knew I had that dedicated of a "fan"), isn't worth the small amount of memory that's being wasted on it.

To the OP, sorry for taking this off track, back to the discussion about Baseline Prestige.
