Player Option Declined Topic

I have a question regarding player options and free agency.  I have asked a couple more veteran owners in my league and they did not know, with certainty, what the answer is.
If a player declines his end of the mutual option is he guaranteed to go to free agency or can he be re-signed during the re-sign period?  Does he decline because he wants the additional years that he is now asking for?  Also one of the two players in question declined a 7 million dollar option and is now only asking for 5 million, which to me says the years (larger total contract value) is what the player is looking for.  I understand there is a set formula for how these things work I just do not know what it is capable of in this scenario.

Unless he gives you a message that he's going to "test the free agency market, no matter what", he can be resigned during the re-sign period for his asking price.

It is entirely possible that you will be able to sign him in the re-sign FA phase.  Kind of depends on the player - possibly their patience rating?

And it is common to see a lower yearly salary once they decline an option.

Which, while a nice thing to receive, is a piece of logic that needs to be fixed.

"Take your $5M option and shove it. I want $3.2M instead!"

Well, yeah... but typically over longer term, so more total coin for the player....?

That I hedged with typically points to the issue, I get it... but still.  Rare.

Every time I've seen something like this they want more than 1 year at the lower salary.

Not every time.

Give me a sec to find a better example, but the one at top of mind is  Thomas Shave

Signed for 5M and 5M mutual. Declines 2nd 5M, wants 1 year 4.6M. I sign $4.6M over 2 years with option. Declines $4.6M, wants $4.6M over 1 year.

Tommy ain't too bright.

I've definitely had a guy decline a mutual option and come back with a one season demand for lower than the declined option salary.

Can't remember who it is, but if I do I'll post him.
