If I trade for a big league player and assign him to AAA will he take a demotion penalty?  Thanks.

Potentially. You can't know for certain whether or not any particular person takes the demotion hit in advance, but yes there is a chance in that scenario.

The only time the demotion penalty is supposed to be waived is DL moves submitted at the same time as the demotion.
