Question about a big FA signing.... Topic

Have a FA that will be a max contract guy. He has only been on my team two seasons, as I traded for him. Do I get the benefit of him being on my team, or does he have to be there for a certain amount of time? I understand the better coaching aspect of it, but I figured I would get first dibs on him if I offered him a max contract since I am the current team.
