Every day reliever or super starter? Topic

Curious about opinions on the usage of  Larry Houck. Right now I've got him as a B Tandem starter, simply to try and get him as much use as possible after just being drafted. But he projects out with a 46 stamina and 88 durability, along with A+ ratings across the board. He could either be a dominant closer each save opportunity or pitch every other day as a starter/tandem guy.

Thoughts?

Anytime one of your best pitchers can throw 40 pitches, I think he's better served as a starter.   You've got to get 1450ish innings from your staff.   Leaving innings on the table from your better pitchers is mis-usage IMO.

I dont take the time to micro-manage my pitching staff unless I really have to....  I would use him at SETUP A.. You can easily get 100-150 IP out of him that way.. Unless your SP are dogshet... Then maybe take the time to switch him in out of rotation spots everyday..

I would tend to use him as a Setup A. If he really ends up with A+ ratings across the board (and so is clearly your best pen arm), the SimAI will turn to him first over all the other Setup A.

If you're able to check 3 times per day and remember to move him to Tandem B every time he's available, an A+ ratings guy with 46/88 can throw in 110+ games.

If I had someone like that and left him in Setup A the way I usually set up my pen, I'd expect about 250+ IP from him in relief (in about 100 appearances or so).

Most days I can check in between each sim. At worst it's still twice a day to manage all pitching staffs. I am leaning towards starter just to see what kind of numbers he can put up. At worst I can try a season of each and see what happens.

I wonder how much just two pitches hurt Christensen and could potentially hurt my guy as well as a Tandem starter?

His lack of consistency has annoyed me.   That's why I dropped the Tandem(didn't notice your guy had two pitches).

He's going to SuA next season.    With two pitches, that might be your best bet.

Even if he's only going to pitch, at most, 4 innings? My (most likely flawed) logic being that with only one trip through the batting order as a tandem starter, the two pitches wouldn't hurt him as much? I'd keep his max pitch count at around 45 or 50...

Your guy has 3 pitches, each of which should be above average. I'm not sure I'd bank on his skill set actually being "A+" but that isn't because of any lack of quality pitches.

Sorry, A then. 93 control, 73/88 splits and two pitches above 80 with the third at 67. Would be a top 5 reliever w/out question.

Individual pitches are not thrown, so concern about "trips through the batting order" is irrelevant.  The quality of the pitches are the most important factor.

I use Bengie Franco as a setup A and can get 160-180 innings out of him. He has very similar STA/DUR to your guy.

For your sake, I hope he hits those ratings, but I wouldn't bet on it happening. That's a *long* way to go in control and splits (his pitch assortment should be very good).

EDIT - To be honest, I'd bet against him getting really close to the 46/88 too.

19 years old with a current 76 makeup; correct me if I'm wrong (been awhile since I played) but don't those numbers bode well for him hitting projections, provided I keep my coaches good?
