Reid - Mopup.  You don't want that low control in anything other than a mop-up inning-eating scenario.  You can also make him a Long B.

Karsay - Long A

Pimentel - Closer.  Normally, I avoid the closer role, but his low durability and stamina makes him the exception.

The other four could be Setup A, though I think you could cut one out of the picture for an additional position player.

Karsay and Sewell are probably gone next season..

I have a couple sketchy SP's so I tend to get a lot of IP out of relief..

If you're carrying a mop-up pitcher, you're wasting a roster spot IMO.
2/27/2014 4:29 PM
I agree mop up is a waste. Dom Reed was called up to eat garbage innings and start some games once in awhile.
2/27/2014 5:20 PM
Agree with tec, except I might also make Karsay Setup A.  It's a terrific bullpen.

I disagree that mopup is a waste-- for some teams, their primary 10 or 11 pitchers can't quite handle the full complement of innings in a season, and having someone to pitch 50-70 really low leverage innings can help the other guys avoid fatigue.  I wouldn't call up a crappy AAA guy like Reid to do it, though; I prefer to use a guy who is better than that, more AAAA, in case you ever make one of those games close.  Hersh Heredia is a good example, might be even a little better than my usual mopup man (hell, he made the All-Star team this season).

The key phrase, as dedelman so nicely put it, is "low leverage innings".

Ideally, the guy at the end of my pitching staff will be high quality enough where I would feel comfortable pitching in most normal situations.  But that's not always the case due to available talent and budget constraints.  So that last guy on the staff is often going to be a lower end guy who I'm going to sacrifice to pitch those low leverage innings and thus save my better quality guys for the higher leverage innings.  That's what the mopup guy is for.

If by chance my last guy is decent, then rather than waste him in the mopup role, he'll get bumped up to a Long B or a Long A.

Dom should be okay against the weaker teams if/when I need a spot starter. His above average vsR and pretty good GB, VEL,1P, 2P should help offset his bad control..
2/27/2014 9:06 PM

I think well above average splits are the best remedy to mediocre (or slightly less than mediocre) control.  And I'd argue that a vsR split of 70 is not "above average".  At least, not by much.

I'd be leery about 42 control paired with 54/70 splits, no matter what the VEL/GB/P1/P2 ratings were.  If I had a pitcher with control in the low 40's, I'd want splits in the mid 80's or higher.

I'm getting ready to play the team with the best OPS.. I think I'll toss him in for a start.. Whats your predictions?

It will be Dom Reid vs this guy
2/27/2014 11:00 PM

The Strange from Lagrange goes 5 and a 1/3. gives up 3 in the first inning. and another one after he is pulled.
2/27/2014 11:10 PM

VR of 70 is pretty much the bottom end of splits for a BL pitcher.    Reid looks like a guy I'd put at LRB and let him eat a few innings from that spot.   My best examples are Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Al Wagner and Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: George Cannon on my Coop team.    I don't expect league average numbers from them but they can eat innings on the cheap.    But the only reason either of them is getting a shot, other than being cheap labor in long relief roles, is because Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Mark Camp was so unexpectedly good for my MG team.

All that said, I'm not calling up anyone to "mop-up".    If I had to do that, I'd just working on building a better staff.
