Leaving Kentucky for Harvard Topic

Let me tell a story about Phelan.  Today, I left the University of Kentucky for Harvard.  I had been at Kentucky for a long time without ever figuring it out.  Just could not excel there.

So, off to something different - at least my kids will get a free Harvard education.

Here's the story of Phelan.  I started off great in Phelan - three straight final fours in the first three seasons of the world.  Epic battles with zhawk and others.  Moved up fast.  Got to DI and then to a BCS job at LSU.  Should have stayed there.  I understood recruiting at LSU.

Season 13, I was ready to go to an elite and Kentucky was available.  Season 13!  Now, 55 seasons later it is off to Hahvahd Yahd.

Kentucky record - with better firing logic, I woulda been gone

And now Harvard.  I saw this Chitwood guy playing intramurals.  He said he'd rather work on his classic greek and latin, but he does have a great outside shot.

kinda reminds me of Mark Coury....  starter at Kentucky as freshman,  then transfers to Cornell and comes off the bench.

I played with you for about 8 seasons in the SEC when I was at Arkansas, and always thought you were "too nice" in recruiting. Seemed you were too concerned with not butting heads with conference mates rather than doing what was best for your program. I remember saying something about in the CC, talking about since you had an A+ baseline prestige the conference kind of depends on you to live up to that prestige. I think more than any other BCS conference the SEC along with the Big 12 are dependent on their A+ baseline schools to be really good, simply because (unless I'm mistaken) no other school in the conference is over an A- baseline in those 2 conferences.

My unsolicited thoughts. Lol.

Just for the record, Metsmax, your record at UK without getting fired is STELLAR in comparison to K-State in Tark that I wrote about in that other thread. KSU has had the same coach for 29 seasons, of which only 9 have resulted in a winning record, and I think there has only been like 4 NT berths.

Kentucky is one of the tougher places to recruit from in HD. I've had both UK (Allen) and Louisville (Tark), and the combined experience convinced me to never again take a job in that region. Never enough high-level recruits there given the number of good baseline prestige teams in the area.

I am at Louisville in Knight and I am learning the same thing... So many top schools in the region. Once I got to B+ prestige and I was pretty happy I was quickly slapped down by A+ prestige schools on recruits.

Kentucky does feel surrounded in terms of the recruiting environment - and kmason is right, I played too nice for a long time.  It may be that one has to recruit at Kentucky with swagger and a readiness to take risks.
