Question about scoring Topic

So I am new to this game. I have been reading over the forums but I have a question. How can I tell if a player I am recruiting can be a scoring threat for me? Say I am looking at a SG or SF, what ratings should I really concern myself with if I am looking for a scorer for my team? The same question applies to PF or C. I am assuming for them, a high rating in athleticism and low-post would mean they are a scoring option.

Think of scoring in two ways: perimeter and interior.

For perimeter scoring (which you mostly get from guards) most important skills are: per, spd, bh (not necessarily in that order)

For interior scoring (which is mostly forwards / centers but can also come from guards), most important skills are: lp, ath, bh (not necessarily in that order)

The trick is to get a mix of perimeter and interior scorers who can also play defense.

There are certain combos that lead to good scorers. Position is irrelevant.

Speed/Per
Ath/lp
Spd/bh

That's exactly where you start.

Don't forego good team passing, either. I'm not sure if this is just becoming a forum fact or not, but the overall value of your teams passing seems to lead to more efficient scoring. This may be slightly off topic (individual scoring attributes) but good to keep in mind when building a team

I've got a freshman sf with these skills
Ath70 sp50 lp20 pe20 bh30 pa10

And he is my leading scorer at 11ppg and shooting 55% through 12 games. Granted we have played an incredibly easy schedule.. only 3 games vs top 100.
Clearly he is just using his huge ath/sp. Advantage to get easy buckets against weak teams and I assume he will be largely ineffective against better teams.

Here's my question... would you expect different results from him if he were playing pf? On the one hand his athsp would probably be even more dominant. On the other hand does the sim engine look at pf differently and not utilize that great ath as much and not allow for slashing baskets? If this type of player could be effective as a pf.. it would almost seem to make lp superfluous. Motion offense. And I suspect he is most effective vs press and least vs zone But haven't verified that.

Thoughts?

What team? I can't seem to see him on any listed?

In this case he is using the ATH/LP  heavy equation.  The question I would ask is who is covering him?  Is he coming off the bench against some defenders with low DEF, ATH and BLK?

I would guess he could score reasonably well against a SIM SF with scores in the 30's and 40's.

If you played him at PF, he is likely to see higher BLK scorers so in theory his production would go down.

he is starting, but opposing starters are not bruce bowen.  he probably averages 15-20ish point advnatages in both ath and sp every night

im wondering what happens when he faces defenders who match his ath sp and have decent def and iq?   i gotta believe it will be like turning off a faucet... he will go from being a very good scorer to completely gawdawful.

my low WE kid didnt take the RS.  now i gotta decide whether to put it my other soph.  it would be perfect,  but that kid is has 69 pe with a bit more upside, and without him all i have is 3 kids that will at best be low 60s.   and its a decent team.  i feel like his perimeter threat could be important.
i just kind hate carrying 12 players as its a zone team and the depth will be kinda wasted.
(as opposed to the Poets, who run press and really need at least 11 which may mean taking a lesser player if i want to RS anyone there.

I couldn't find this guy on any of your rosters either. I would assume this guy is playing DIII and like you said is playing against very weak competition. I was hoping to find this kid to see if he had any kind of rebounding. Especially if your playing zone you need to have very good rebounding at the 4 and 5. You're already at a disadvantage in rebounding just playing zone, so any potential increase in his offensive numbers would be negated by the second chance points your zone team is likely to give up.

Also, he'll probably be going up against more athletic players if you move him to pf. This might also negate some of his offensive production. Even at small forward I wouldn't expect home to have a speed advantage at the sf too often against decent teams. Even at DIII I very rarely have a SF below 60 in speed.

Keep him at SF and ride out his positive production as long as you can
