So, I guess my strategy is to blame here, because I choose pitching and defense over offense....but, my conundrum is that consistently I lose one run games. Elemental statistics say 1run games, like extra inning games are about luck more than skill. Yet, I find my winning percentage is nowhere near .500. With my four teams, I have a 1-8 record (out of 18 total games), a 4-13 record (59 games in), 17-14 in 110 games, and 4-9 in 55 games. I use player rest if winning by one or more in the 6th to replace poor defenders, I set my bullpen pitchers to go 1-2 innings with no closer....

Is there something I am not doing? I mean, this is a season to season problem for my teams

I use player rest if winning by one or more in the 6th to replace poor defenders.

I assume you mean that you are putting in your defensive replacements at that point, and that's not your player rest setting.

If that's the case, then I would say that you are pulling the "defensive rep" trigger far too quickly.  Your offensive starters are getting pulled after only five innings, and you're depending on your defensive guys to get you through 12 outs.

I set my "defensive replacements" setting to "2 or more runs in the 8th inning or later".  You want your regulars to try to win the game through the first seven, and give your defensive reps a little bit more of a cushion to close it out over the last two.

I agree with tec- 2 runs in the 8th sounds like the correct time duration and amount of runs for d-subs. 6th inning is wayy too early, you have at least 1 full lineup cycle left, maybe even 2. Leave the offense in there.  However, it could be an interesting mathematical discussion whether it is ok to do late defensive subs (8th or 9th inning) with 1-run leads, because if the opponent gets "lucky" and hits a solo-HR, you have hampered your ability to retake the lead.  I did some web searches but couldn't find any data
