I've always looked at this and thought it was inherently worded wrong, but I felt like it potentially said this on the CBS selection show IRL as well...but shouldn't the middle box be "FIRST FOUR OUT"?

hmmm

nope, i think it makes sense as is

if you ask me who the first four out were i would say cornell, etc   the teams at the bottom of the rpi barrell.
and heck there were probably 200+ that were very easy to say they were out.

and they keep choppin until (in HD) there are 68 left.... and then they cut four more... the last four... so the last four out are those who barely missed the NT

It could be either way but I think most fans would agree that colonel's interpretation is easier to understand

I actually noticed that too, and at first I was with colonels, but I decided shortly thereafter that's it definitely more correct as it is.

I thought about it once upon a time, and decided it didn't really matter and forgot about it

ETA: FWIW, I believe the last 4 out should be the teams that finished ranked as the bottom 4, ie the last four out of all the teams that make up the set of teams that are out, these are the last 4...

Right, it doesn't make sense to have the "LAST" four out, then the "NEXT" four out, because LAST implies there aren't any more...there aren't any after the LAST four in...why are there after the LAST four out?

Look at it this way - the first team in is the highest seed.  The last four in are the lowest seeds.  The first one out is the worst team.  The last four out are the best who didn't make it.  They were the last four designated as "out".

Because "Next" implies "The next to the last 4".

I still haven't seen a good (enough) argument to change my mind...this just isn't right.

Like Al said, it reads strangely.  And as llama said, the first team out would be the worst in the country, the 2nd team out is the 2nd worst team in the country, etc, making the last team out the best team that didn't make the tourney.  Doing a quick search, multiple online dictionaries define "next to last" the same way, with Cambridge's definition being "describes the person or thing before the last one."  Grammatically it's correct, but when reading it quickly I agree it does sound strange.

It's dumb, the 4 teams that are listed are the FIRST FOUR teams to miss out on the NT...whatever numbers they are on the Projy report...they're the FIRST FOUR to miss, they aren't the last anything, and you can't have a next after a last, it just doesn't make sense.

How would you refer to the next-to-last anything?  Google "next to the last" and you'll see 450,000,000 results that beg to differ.
