A guy dropped to my D3 Wittenberg team at the 7am (CST) cycle today.  Sent a CV and scholarship.  He rejected the CV.  He's still considering no one.  Any thoughts on what else I should do to sign the guy, or even to get him to accept effort?

Send him a letter with the cv.

Thanks, TJ.  Worth a shot.  We'll see what happens...

darnoc, when you do home and campus visits, there is a chance they won't be accepted if you aren't considered, or if you are behind in a battle. you basically have 3 options at this point:
1) just send the hv and/or cv again, it will probably get accepted the second time. CVs are rejected more often, so maybe try a HV or two instead? within 360 miles, HVs and CVs are both good options. if you do send 2 HVs, make sure to send them 1 by 1, so the RNG for them getting computed is done independently. if you send 2, both are rejected, or neither.

2) you can use guaranteed acceptance items. the scholarship offer will help your CV get accepted next time you try, but its still not guaranteed. calls, letters, and scouting trips are all guaranteed acceptance. within 360 miles, you can toss in a SV or two to help the guy accept your other stuff, but over 360, they get really really inefficient. 10 or 20 or 30 calls or letters are another option (over 360 miles, the calls/letter are more efficient than SVs, but within 360, SVs are more efficient). this is not necessary, however, usually if you just try the HV or CV it just gets accepted. if that is too much risk for you (you don't want to wait), you can use this method.

3) veteran option - if nobody is considering the player, you can promise a start, which will get him considering you. then you can do whatever visits you want. after you do that (meaning, not in the same cycle), you can take the start off with a redshirt and no redshirt (do one after the other, in the same cycle). note this will prohibit you from redshirting the player during the season.

Thanks guys.  The letter + CV worked.

Gillispie-throwing in guaranteed accepted effort make sense.  Never really thought it was necessary before but now I see why/how it's useful.  Unfortunately, we're in day 5 of recruiting for D3 and money is a bit thin.  Just mentioning it because sending multiple visits (home or campus) just wasn't an option at this point due to money constraints.  But thanks for the insights.

no problem, i usually just resend 1 myself, and usually it gets accepted. that scholarship offer is worth pretty much, i think that makes your odds of getting accepted the 2nd time around much higher, and usually you get accepted first time around anyway... HV is more likely that CV to get accepted, and most recruits will consider u for HV + scholarship so you might want to try HV over CV in the future. late in recruiting they should all be fine with HV and early, they should all be fine with 1 HV unless your prestige is lower and they are really good recruits who think highly of themselves. im not even sure if its possible in d3 for hv/scholarship not to be enough, but in d2 it is possible.

just to add to gil's 12:14 post - if you inform to clear promise then un-inform and leave it at that, he's right the player will never accept a redshirt. You can still reapply the redshirt (or just leave it applied initially if you've gotten him to keep accepting regular effort anyway and have interest in redshirting him).  If there is an active RS inform in play when the kid signs, he will take redshirt without WE drop (even though his reply message when its applied might be pissy)

maybe I've simply not tried it enough in D3, but I haven't had much luck with just a single HV + scholly working.  If I want to go cheap, sometimes I'll do this and throw in an eval to get me across the considering line.  However, for most A/A+ prestige D3 teams that recruit "elite" D3 kids or simply wait for dropdowns, what percentage of time does this work?

hmmm, ill step back and let someone who knows d3 better answer, as there are a lot of guys who can say better than me. scholarship + HV was my standard fare for d2 kids when i was in d2, and i use it in d1 even. i thought it worked in d3 but its been so long, if this sounds questionable, i'd best not speculate any further :) i thought the considering points were always increasing - meaning a high end d3 recruit took less to get considered in d3 than a high end d2 recruit in d2, and less than a high end d1 recruit in d1. but maybe not.

HV + scholarship doesn't work early in d2 or D3. In fact, a number of high end recruits required more than 2 hvs + a scholarship. The bar definitively lowers in the recruiting timeline but one HV won't work day 1 or 2.

I learned that from tkimble.

If only there was a place on the site where this accumulation of information could be stored in one place that would be a logical stopping point for coaches with questions or requiring a guide.

Good information, too bad it'll have scrolled off the front page in a day or two.

The search function on here is decent, and can get you to almost any information you might need.

HV + Scholly works most of the time with a high prestige at DIII, even early on. I try not to use it early anymore because of those times it doesn't work and I don't want to be out a cycle. I will say I've never been turned down by adding a scouting trip to the HV + scholly, provided of course the recruit doesn't reject the HV.

This I have to play with. Maybe I am confusing d2 and d3 by the one hv never works for me.
