INITIAL PHONE RESPONSE Topic

If I'm trying to grab a guy in d2 and i'm d3, do I have to get a positive initial phone call response? If I get the "i think i'm going to a bigger school" message, can he still be pulled down with tons of ST? Assuming as long as I don't get the "never playing for you" message, then he can be pulled down?

Just trying to find out what messages I can get besides backup where the guy can be pulled.

Post the actual message and I'll tell you what it means.  Basically, if it doesn't say "I'll keep you in mind", "if that doesn't work out" or "backup", then it's probably a no.

I can't remember the whole text of the one you are mentioning.

I haven't gotten one yet.. recruiting is about to start and i'm just preparing myself to persue this guy i've been eyeballing or not... if i don't get some sort of recruitable message, then i guess he cant be pulled down

That's right.  The easiest to classify are the coach-calls.  I tend to give 1 to any recruit on the D2 list that I think might be interested.  Once you get the response, you classify it into immediately recruitable (sometimes even on your D2 list a recruit will be immediately available w/o pulldown - mostly w/in 70 miles), backup option (given enough money, these guys can be pulled down or might drop) and "no".   I think "no" means never.

well, my initial response was backup....   then after my 3rd ST i got this message....

BTW, based on the other coaches that were there, I'd say the only realistic shot we have is if his top choices pass on him.

Does this mean he can't be pulled down... or i just have to keep trying?

The phone call told you he could be pulled down.  That message says you probably still have a ways to go - it doesn't change the initial response.

am i better off spreading out my scouting trips? or bombarding him with one or the other.. or does it matter at all

Some coaches do groups of 3, some groups of 5, some go 10 every time.  This has been discussed a lot, as much as anything else in the forums.  Find what works for you.

Early in the recruiting period, it's rare a kid is going to consider you for anything less than 8-10 evals.  So anything less than that is probably a waste.  If you throw 10 at him and he's still not considering you, then that's where it becomes a bit trickier to know how much to keep throwing at him each cycle to pull him down.  Some subjective factors include how bad you want him, how bad you want to get on his list first, your general risk tolerance, how early it is in recruiting, how good a player he is, cash available, etc.

What llama said you can seach "pull down" and get a lot of great information and questionable forum facts.

If the player is not considering any other team, then I would suggest going 10 ST + schol + 10 ltrs + 1 HV (if you've already sent a few ST, then just bring it up to a full 10 on that first real effort).   No matter what, he'll probably reject the HV the first time.  No big deal.  I've had many recruits reject the HV and start considering me the same cycle.   If he's not considering you after that first shot, then you might send sets of 2 or 3 ST + 1 HV per cycle until he is pulled down.

You've got to re-evaluate if he starts considering any other team(s).

If I understand correctly, the HV will indeed always be rejected if you offer all that in once cycle.  I believe seble confirmed that recruiting actions are generally processed highest-value (or -cost) to lowest, which would mean that the HV is processed before you get any credit for the ST or letters.

It is almost always rejected, but, when rejected, it's free.  On the hand, the order of recruiting actions are low-to-high.  Eat it, llamanunts!
